2026-27 points-league rankings

This turns the encyclopedia's team-desk projections into two availability-adjusted points boards β€” a top 200 under Yahoo default scoring and a top 100 under ESPN default scoring, which are materially different questions; both are models, not consensus, ADP, or platform pre-ranks.

Research cutoff: 2026-07-18, America/New_York. Intended use: 12-team redraft, head-to-head points. Position eligibility, replacement level, weekly schedule, fantasy-playoff schedule, roster slots, bonuses, and league-specific lineup limits are not priced.

Which table to use

This note now carries two ranked boards. They are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one is a real draft error, not a rounding difference.

If the league is Use Where
Yahoo, or any league whose settings are PTS/REB/AST/STL/BLK/TO with no shot-event terms The Yahoo-default board Top 200
ESPN, or any league that scores FGM, FGA, FTM, FTA, and 3PM The ESPN-default board ESPN default top 100
CBS, or any custom league Neither as published β€” copy the league's actual weights and re-run see Platform-setting sensitivity

The two boards disagree meaningfully: 126 of the 253 ranked players move five or more slots between them, and 12 move fifteen or more. ESPN's βˆ’1 per field-goal attempt is the driver, and it is a genuine change in player value rather than a display artifact. If the platform is unknown, resolve it before drafting rather than averaging the boards.

Model, not consensus

The statistical inputs are the 30 independent team desks' median 2026-27 player cards, normalized in 2026-27 fantasy basketball player projections and Data/player-projections-2026-07-18.csv. The eligible comparison pool contains 261 players projected for at least 20 games and 15 minutes per appearance with complete counting-stat inputs. This note applies one formula mechanically and displays the top 200.

No market smoothing was added. A surprising rank therefore means β€œthe projection plus this formula produced it,” not β€œthe public agrees.” The current public-source audit found no trustworthy complete post-draft 2026-27 consensus, ADP sample, and projection set to substitute for a model. See Major fantasy media, Fantrax, and Hashtag Basketball.

Neutral illustrative scoring

\[ \mathrm{FP/G}=\mathrm{PTS}+1.2(\mathrm{REB})+1.5(\mathrm{AST})+3(\mathrm{STL})+3(\mathrm{BLK})-\mathrm{TO} \]

This is neutral only in the practical sense that it is simple, transparent, percentage-free, and broadly familiar. It exactly matches Yahoo's public default points weights at the cutoff and also matches the disclosed formula used by FantraxHQ's prior-season points board; it is not a universal fantasy standard. Yahoo default settings, accessed 2026-07-18 Β· FantraxHQ's disclosed 2025 points formula

Bands and flags

The PG band and Total band columns translate rank within the 261-player comparison pool into 12-team draft shorthand: R1 = 1–12, R2 = 13–24, R3–4 = 25–48, R5–7 = 49–84, R8–10 = 85–120, R11–13 = 121–156, R14–16 = 157–192, and R17+ = 193 or later.

Avail is only the projected GP band: High = 70+, Med = 62–69, Low = 50–61, VLow = below 50. It is not a medical probability.

Flags are compact audit prompts, not automatic fades:

Platform-setting sensitivity

Surface at cutoff Relevant default or latest public weights Who generally rises relative to this board Who generally falls

ESPN's official explainer confirms both the shot-event terms and the heavier assist/stock/turnover weights, and states the eleven default values verbatim: Point 1, 3PM 1, FGM 2, FGA βˆ’1, FTM 1, FTA βˆ’1, REB 1, AST 2, STL 4, BLK 4, TOV βˆ’2. ESPN default points-league scoring explained

Correction 2026-07-18: this section previously judged an exact ESPN re-rank "impossible from projection rows that omit FGM/FGA and FTM/FTA" and offered only directional notes. That judgment is withdrawn. The shot volumes recovered in Data/player-projections-corrected.csv supply projected FGA and FTA for every pooled player, so the ESPN default is now computed rather than described β€” see ESPN default top 100. The withdrawn caution was partly right about the risk: 194 of 253 ranked players use attempts scaled from 2025-26 rates rather than stated attempts, which is why the ESPN board is published to 100 rather than 200. The directional paragraph below is retained because it was the basis of the earlier judgment, but the computed table supersedes it where the two disagree.

CBS's latest public Free rules at the cutoff were still labelled 2025-26, so they are a sensitivity anchor rather than a guarantee of 2026-27 settings. Its Commissioner product explicitly allows custom scoring. CBS Free official rules Β· CBS Commissioner FAQ

Practical examples: ESPN's extra block, steal, and three-point weights strengthen Victor Wembanyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, Walker Kessler, and low-turnover creator Tyrese Haliburton, while its doubled turnover penalty is harsher on Luka DončiΔ‡, Cade Cunningham, Trae Young, and Josh Giddey. CBS Free's one-point stocks weaken specialist cases such as Kessler and Dyson Daniels, while two-point assists help Young, Haliburton, Giddey, and James Harden. Shooting-event efficiency can offset or reverse these directional examples; run the actual league formula before drafting.

Correction 2026-07-18: the computed ESPN board contradicts half of the paragraph above. The rise claims hold β€” Haliburton moves 26 β†’ 14, Kessler 34 β†’ 29, Holmgren 37 β†’ 32 β€” and Wembanyama and Gilgeous-Alexander hold at 2 and 4 only because they are already at the ceiling. The fall claims do not. DončiΔ‡ stays 3rd, Young stays 27th, Giddey slips two slots, and Cunningham rises 8 β†’ 5. The error was reasoning from the doubled turnover penalty in isolation: ESPN also doubles assists to 2, and for high-turnover creators the assist gain roughly cancels the turnover loss. The actual ESPN fallers are inefficient volume shooters, whom the βˆ’1 field-goal-attempt term punishes and whom this paragraph did not mention at all β€” Bennedict Mathurin drops 107 β†’ 139, Julius Randle 31 β†’ 56, Jalen Green 104 β†’ 120. Treat the table, not this paragraph, as the ESPN answer.

Top 200

Verification 2026-07-18: an audit alleged this table had been generated with an undocumented +0.5 Γ— 3PM term, making the published order inconsistent with the stated Yahoo formula, and proposed republishing it from the corrected_points_rank column of Data/player-projections-corrected.csv. The allegation was checked and does not hold, so the table below is unchanged. The points_score and points_model_rank columns of Data/player-projections-2026-07-18.csv do carry the +0.5 Γ— 3PM defect β€” that part of the audit is correct β€” but this note never consumed them. Recomputing the stated formula from the raw projections reproduces every one of the 200 displayed FP/G values exactly, and reproduces the displayed order with a maximum deviation of one slot, entirely explained by the deliberate exclusion of unsigned free agent LeBron James at index rank 55. Against the defective 3PM-inflated ordering the same table misplaces 42 players by five or more slots, so it demonstrably was not built from it. The proposed replacement column was also unsuitable on its own terms: corrected_points_rank is a pure per-game rank that drops the availability adjustment, and adopting it would have silently promoted low-GP players β€” it ranks 60-game Kawhi Leonard 13th. No change was made.

ESPN default top 100

ESPN's default head-to-head points scoring is not a variant of the Yahoo formula; it is a different question. It scores five shot events the Yahoo default ignores entirely, and the βˆ’1 on every field-goal attempt means a missed shot costs a full point. Netted out, a made three is worth 5 (3 points, +1 3PM, +2 FGM, βˆ’1 FGA), a made two is worth 3, a made free throw is worth 1, and every miss is βˆ’1 β€” ESPN's own explainer states these three totals. Volume is no longer free, and efficiency is priced directly rather than through a percentage category.

\[ \mathrm{FP/G}=\mathrm{PTS}+\mathrm{3PM}+2(\mathrm{FGM})-\mathrm{FGA}+\mathrm{FTM}-\mathrm{FTA}+\mathrm{REB}+2(\mathrm{AST})+4(\mathrm{STL})+4(\mathrm{BLK})-2(\mathrm{TO}) \]

Weights are ESPN's stated defaults, unchanged since the 2020 redesign and still current at the cutoff. ESPN default points-league scoring explained Β· ESPN Fantasy Basketball 101: adjusting the settings

How the shot volumes were obtained, and how far to trust them. The team-desk dossiers state FGA and FTA for only 54 of the 262 pooled players. For the rest, Data/player-projections-corrected.csv derives them: projected FTA scales each player's 2025-26 free-throw rate by projected minutes, and projected FGA is then solved from the scoring identity PTS = 2(FGM) + 3PM + FTM. The volumes are therefore consistent with the projected points by construction rather than guessed β€” across the pool the implied points reproduce the projected points to a mean error of 0.07 and a maximum of 1.01. That is an internal-consistency guarantee, not an accuracy guarantee: 194 players use minute-scaled 2025-26 rates and 14 rookies use a pool-median rate, so a player whose efficiency or shot diet genuinely changes will be mispriced. This is why the ESPN board stops at 100 while the Yahoo board runs to 200, and why ESPN ranks deserve less deference than Yahoo ranks at equal distance from the top.

Ordering uses the same draft index as the Yahoo board β€” ESPN FP/G Γ— sqrt(GP/82) β€” so the two are directly comparable. The Yahoo rank and Ξ” columns give each player's position on the Top 200 board and the slots gained or lost by switching platforms; a positive Ξ” means ESPN likes the player better. Unsigned free agents are excluded from both boards, so ranks in the pool of 253 signed players are aligned.

Latest public points-rank anchor

The latest complete season-labelled public 2026-27 points board found by the source desks was AndrΓ© Snellings's ESPN Top 150 from April 14. It is valuable as a reproducible historical prior, but it predates the draft and major offseason changes, retains superseded teams, contains no 2026 rookies, and still showed the April modification date at the cutoff despite promising a post-draft update. ESPN way-too-early H2H points Top 150

Player This model ESPN Apr. 14 What the gap principally tests

Anthony Edwards 13 10 Team-desk rate line versus ESPN's stronger April star prior

Kyrie Irving 72 34 Availability and reduced projected rate beside Dallas's newer hierarchy
Josh Giddey 14 35 Triple-double counting line and percentage-free formula versus ESPN's lower early price

The stable part is the four-name apex: Nikola JokiΔ‡, Victor Wembanyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Luka DončiΔ‡ occupied the top four in ESPN's points list, Yahoo/NBA.com's cross-format early first round, and Rotoworld's May category mock, although their order varied. Yahoo Sports/NBA.com early first round Β· Rotoworld early mock

RotoWire's April discussion also treated Cooper Flagg as a first-round points candidate with a defensible case as high as seventh; that supports the model's No. 9 without turning one podcast discussion into consensus. RotoWire/Apple Podcasts, 2026-04-06

The absence of a current public consensus is itself a finding. Through July 18, no complete post-draft Yahoo, CBS, Rotoworld, Fantrax, or Hashtag 2026-27 points board was found; FantasyPros's platform-specific ESPN/Yahoo/CBS ECR pages still exposed 2025-26 payloads. How to use the board

  1. Copy the league's exact scoring weights before looking at rank, then pick the matching board β€” Yahoo-default settings use Top 200, ESPN-default settings use ESPN default top 100. If the weights match neither, re-run the formula rather than reading across.
  2. Start from FP/G; use Season FP, Avail, and the medical flag to decide how much missed-time risk the roster can absorb.
  3. Treat tier crossings as meaningful only when the underlying dossier, role, and settings agree. Do not trade value for a one-slot model edge.
  4. Re-run after any camp clearance, surgery update, starting-lineup change, trade, or projection revision. The player links are the audit trail.
  5. Once a real 2026-27 ADP sample exists, compare price to this model rather than replacing projection value with popularity.
