Paolo Banchero

Paolo Banchero is an early points-league cornerstone whose category value remains constrained by free-throw volume, turnovers, and merely ordinary defensive events.

Projection card

Healthy active-game allocation: 34 minutes. Confidence: medium-high on role and counting volume; medium on percentages and games played.

Correction 2026-07-18: allocation trimmed 35 → 34 minutes as part of a team-wide rebalance of Orlando's minute map, which had been running an eight-man rotation and starving established bench players (Jevon Carter, Bitadze, Penda) of realistic minutes. The counting-stat line falls proportionally. Separately, Sweeney's stated intention to play faster is an upward skew on these numbers that has not been priced in. See Orlando Magic.

2025-26 baseline

Banchero played 72 games at 34.7 minutes and averaged 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.6 blocks, 1.2 threes, and 3.1 turnovers. He shot .459 from the field on 15.9 attempts and .775 from the line on a category-shaping 8.2 attempts. A November 2025 left-groin strain interrupted the season, but he returned and ultimately supplied a sturdy games-played total.

That line captures the fantasy split. He produces the points-league currencies—usage, shots, free throws, rebounds, and assists—without enough threes, stocks, or efficiency to become an automatic early category pick.

Role and pathway

Banchero is Orlando's primary power forward, highest-volume scorer, and one of three major initiators with Wagner and Bane. Sean Sweeney can stagger the stars or play through more early offense, but no plausible healthy rotation removes Banchero from a mid-30s-minute, high-usage role. The projection adds modest scoring and assist growth while holding rebounds and defensive events close to established levels.

The critical basketball question is not whether Banchero gets the ball. It is what happens around those touches. Better spacing can lift his rim efficiency and assist conversion. More Black/Suggs creation could reduce difficult self-created shots without meaningfully cutting his minutes. A crowded frontcourt is much less threatening to him than it is to Orlando's centers.

Category shape

Because percentages are volume-weighted, .775 on nearly nine free throws can hurt more than the raw percentage looks. In roto or balanced 9-cat, Bane and a healthy Wagner can finish closer to Banchero than real-life hierarchy suggests.

Format and market map

Format Base posture
9-cat redraft Roughly top 70-110 per game; draft only when the build absorbs FT/TO
H2H points Top 25-35 target
Dynasty points Cornerstone
Dynasty categories Strong young asset, but below similarly aged two-way category stars

ESPN placed him 30th in its April 14 way-too-early points ranking. Sports Illustrated placed him 22nd in an early general top 50, while Alex Barutha's July 14 rapid exercise had him 41st. Dynatyze displayed him 38th on July 18; Hashtag Basketball's July 2 analyst dynasty board had him 47th, but its crowd keeper board had him 22nd. The spread is rational: managers are pricing different formats, age horizons, and tolerance for category drag.

Yahoo's May 4 Orlando exit interview reported a 2025-26 finish around 27th in its High Score points system but only 134th in 9-cat. That is the cleanest empirical warning against importing his points rank into categories.

Floor, base, and ceiling

Scenario Line of value
Floor 62 games, similar usage, .45-ish FG, sub-.77 FT and 3.5 turnovers; useful points player but a category build tax
Base 68 games, 23.5/8.5/5.4 with stable middling stocks and slightly better FG
Ceiling 74-plus games, 25-plus points, six assists, .48 FG and closer to .80 FT; top-45 category finish becomes plausible

The ceiling requires an efficiency change, not merely more volume. If the percentages and defensive events stay flat, even 25 points per game may not create a top-30 9-cat season.

Injury and availability

The November 13, 2025 groin strain matters as a recent soft-tissue event, but 72 games is stronger evidence than the short absence. The base trims four games for ordinary variance rather than assuming a chronic limitation. Availability confidence is medium-high relative to Wagner and Suggs.

Evidence trail

Career record

Pre-NBA: Duke, one season (2021-22). 39 games as a starter: 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.1 steals, 0.9 blocks on .478/.338/.729, with Duke reaching the Final Four. ACC Rookie of the Year, first-team All-ACC, consensus second-team All-American. The college profile already showed the NBA shape — heavy interior usage, real passing for a forward, a functional but low-volume three, and free-throw accuracy in the low .70s. Draft: 2022, first round, first overall, Orlando Magic; no draft-night trade. NBA Rookie of the Year in 2023 and an All-Star in 2024.

Fantasy history: One season is cleanly verified and it is the most important one. Yahoo's 2025-26 Orlando exit interview put Banchero 27th in its High Score points format and 134th in nine-category — a 107-place format gap on a 22-8-5 line with 1.3 combined stocks. Earlier seasons' season-end ranks are not archived at public URLs and are not asserted here, but the mechanism behind the 2025-26 split has been present in every season: the counting stats that drive points formats (shots, free-throw attempts, rebounds, assists) are elite, while four of the nine categories are neutral-to-negative at once — field-goal percentage that only just crossed .459, roughly one and a half threes, sub-1.5 stocks, and three turnovers a night. The points-league shape is not merely better than the category shape; they are effectively different players, and the 27th-versus-134th result is the cleanest evidence in this dossier.

Durability: 72, 80, 46, 72. The single major absence is 2024-25: a torn right oblique suffered October 30, 2024 against Chicago, which he played through in the moment and which then cost him 34 games before he returned January 10, 2025. In 2025-26 he strained his left groin on his 23rd birthday, November 12, 2025, at New York, sat the second half, and missed the following game at Brooklyn; Orlando set no return timeline and evaluated him daily. He still finished at 72 games, so the groin event accounts for only part of the ten missed. Outside the oblique, the record is three seasons of 72 to 80 games — a durable high-usage forward, not an availability risk.

Trajectory: The apparent leap is 2024-25's 25.9 points, and it is the season most likely to be misread, because it came in only 46 games and on a usage share inflated by Franz Wagner's absences. The 2025-26 line is the more honest read of what Banchero is now: scoring fell to 22.2 at identical minutes — 23.0 per 36 against 27.1 the year before — because Desmond Bane's arrival genuinely removed possessions. What he gained in exchange is the useful part. Rebounds hit a career-high 8.4, field-goal percentage a career-high .459, and free-throw percentage a career-high .775, the first time that number stopped being a pure liability. The category problem is that the three-point rate went backwards at the same time, from 1.9 makes to 1.2, and steals have drifted down every year since 2023-24. At 23 turning 24 in November he is squarely pre-peak and the efficiency arc is still bending the right way, but the 2026-27 category ceiling depends on things that have never trended up — stocks and three-point volume — rather than on the scoring and rebounding that already work. Expect another points-league cornerstone season and continued nine-cat disappointment unless the shot profile changes.
