Executive read
- Base case: Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, Dean Wade, and Joel Embiid start; Anfernee Simons is the sixth guard; Philadelphia finishes 48-34. A sensible regular-season band is 39-55 wins because the roster can look like a title favorite when whole and a play-in team when Embiid and another creator sit.
- 2025-26 baseline: Philadelphia went 45-37, finished seventh in the East, won the play-in, erased a 3-1 deficit to beat Boston, and was swept by New York in the conference semifinals. Its 115.4 offensive rating and 115.5 defensive rating produced a minus-0.1 net rating and minus-0.27 SRS—far less dominant than the playoff headline. Basketball-Reference team page, accessed July 18, 2026 · NBA Game 7 takeaways, May 2, 2026
- Fantasy concentration: Maxey is the first-round target. Brown, Edgecombe, and Embiid are the next three draftable players, but all carry a different form of discount: usage, usage/age curve, and games played. Simons is a late-round threes bet; the remaining roster is mostly streaming and dynasty depth.
- Offseason reset: Philadelphia officially acquired Brown for Paul George, two firsts, and two seconds; signed Simons, Wade, and Ariel Hukporti; drafted Labaron Philon Jr at No. 22; and lost Quentin Grimes and Kelly Oubre Jr. NBA trade tracker, July 6, 2026 · NBA offseason roundup, accessed July 18, 2026
- Front office: Philadelphia parted ways with president of basketball operations Daryl Morey on May 12, 2026, after the Knicks sweep, and hired Cleveland general manager Mike Gansey as his replacement; Jameer Nelson was promoted to vice president of basketball operations, and HBSE president of sports Bob Myers ran the search. Nick Nurse was retained. Every 2026 offseason move—Philon, Brown, Wade, Simons, Hukporti—is Gansey's, not Morey's. This matters twice: it removes Morey's roster-building priors as a predictor, and it makes the Cleveland org chart a live source of future Philadelphia additions. Sixers announcement · NBC Sports Philadelphia, May 2026
- Roster is unfinished. Philadelphia sits at 14 of 15 standard contracts and two of three two-ways at the cutoff. The 240-minute allocation below assumes no further additions; one veteran-minimum signing would compress the Edwards/Walker/Terry tier and the Philon minutes first.
- LeBron James contingency (added 2026-07-19). Philadelphia is one of the three working finalists — with Cleveland and Miami — for the still-unsigned LeBron James: July 18 ESPN commentary downgraded Golden State to a long shot and Anthony Edwards said Minnesota is "not in it," while Brian Windhorst said James will decide on his own timeline rather than before the schedule deadline. A veteran-minimum James signing would fill the 15th slot, compress Maxey/Brown/Edgecombe usage, and squeeze the Edwards/Walker/Terry wing tier hardest. Do not add his production to any base line until a contract is official. (Yahoo live tracker, July 18 updates)
- Largest model risk: there is no public evidence yet for how Nick Nurse divides creation when all four of Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown, and Embiid play. Any single-number projection that ignores that uncertainty is overconfident.
Roster reconciliation and contract reality
The NBA team page still displayed several 2025-26 free agents on July 18. RealGM's 2026-27 ledger cleanly separates the 17 current names below from free-agent-rights listings for MarJon Beauchamp, Kyle Lowry, Tyrese Martin, and Trendon Watford. Those four receive no Philadelphia projection. Duke Miles is included because he signed an Exhibit 10 contract, but he is a camp/G League candidate rather than a guaranteed opening-night roster player. | Player | Working status at cutoff | Primary fantasy issue |
|---|---|---|
| Tyrese Maxey | Core starter; long-term contract | First-round ceiling versus Brown/Edgecombe/Embiid usage |
| VJ Edgecombe | Core starter; rookie scale | Sophomore efficiency and fourth-option risk |
| Jaylen Brown | Acquired July 6; under contract through 2028-29 | Large usage drop from Boston lead role |
| Joel Embiid | Core starter; 2028-29 player option | Elite rate, league-high availability variance |
| Anfernee Simons | Two-year deal with 2027-28 player option | Sixth-man minutes after fractured left wrist |
| Dean Wade | Four years, $39M via the non-taxpayer mid-level exception; partial Year 4 guarantee | Low-usage starting-PF path |
| Dominick Barlow | Standard deal; 2027 free agent | Rotation 4/5 and Embiid contingency |
| Adem Bona | Four-year second-round-exception deal (No. 41, 2024); 2027-28 team option | Best block stream when Embiid sits |
| Justin Edwards | Team option for 2027-28 | Wing minutes squeezed by Brown |
| Labaron Philon Jr | No. 22 rookie; rookie scale | NBA-ready creation versus crowded guards |
| Jabari Walker | Standard contract; 2027 free agent | Rebounding reserve without stable minutes |
| Dalen Terry | Standard contract; 2027 free agent | Defense/connector role, weak fantasy rate |
| Ariel Hukporti | One-year standard deal | Fourth-center path |
| Johni Broome | Standard developmental contract | Knee history and five-big logjam |
| Caleb Love | Two-way | Scoring call-up behind six ballhandlers |
| Rayan Rupert | Two-way | Defensive wing development, shooting risk |
| Duke Miles | Exhibit 10 camp contract | May play zero NBA games |
Philadelphia's July ledger records Brown, Hukporti, Simons, and Wade on July 6, Miles on July 7, Rupert on July 8, Love on July 5, and Philon on July 3. Treat those dates as higher-confidence status evidence than the residual NBA roster interface. RealGM transaction history

RotoWire's July 12 depth chart agrees on Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown, Wade, and Embiid as the functional first group, while RealGM's automated chart still puts Edwards and Barlow in the nominal lineup. Power forward remains the only contested starting slot, but it is no longer a coin flip: Wade received four years and $39M through the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception from a first-year president who had personally championed him in Cleveland, which is the strongest organizational signal available in July. The counterweight is that Barlow started 59 of his 71 games in 2025-26 and was productive doing it. Neither fact makes Brown a bench player. Correction 2026-07-18: power forward was previously framed as a 50/50 preseason competition. Wade's terms (four years, $39M, full non-taxpayer MLE) and the Morey→Gansey front-office change—Gansey championed Wade as Cleveland's GM—move the starting job to Wade-favored rather than even. Barlow's 59 starts are recorded as the counter-evidence. The 23/20 minute split is unchanged, because the two facts point in opposite directions and neither is a rotation announcement. ESPN
Exactly 240 healthy regulation minutes
This is a neutral competitive-game snapshot. It is not the sum of season-average MPG: deep reserves can average non-zero minutes in the NBA appearances created by injuries, rest, blowouts, and two-way call-ups while receiving zero in a fully healthy night.

Maxey's 2025-26 38.0-minute workload and 1.9 steals/0.8 blocks are deliberately regressed. Brown's 28.7 points and 5.1 assists are also cut because Boston needed him to be a primary engine; Rotoworld independently identified a likely Philadelphia usage decline. Embiid retains elite per-minute production, but his 44-game projection drives a major per-game-versus-totals split. Category map
- Points/3PM: Maxey is the primary volume source; Brown is second. Simons can lead the bench in threes despite playing only 23 minutes. Edgecombe's 1.9 projected threes require modest sophomore growth.
- Assists: Maxey anchors the category. Edgecombe and Brown provide secondary playmaking, while Philon becomes the injury-stream organizer. Brown's assists are more likely to fall than his rebounds after leaving Boston's primary role.
- FG%: Embiid, Barlow, and Bona support the category. Maxey and Brown are neutral-to-positive at projected volume; Love, Rupert, and rookie Philon are downside risks.
- FT%: Maxey, Embiid, and Simons combine strong percentage with useful volume. Brown's nearly six attempts at roughly 80% partially offsets that benefit; Bona/Barlow are low-volume drags.
- Steals/blocks: Maxey and Edgecombe are the perimeter anchors, but both 2025-26 stock rates deserve regression. Embiid and Bona supply blocks; Bona has the cleanest short-term streaming spike when Embiid rests.
- Turnovers: the four stars can combine for roughly ten. Simons, Wade, and the reserve bigs are low-turnover complements.
- Rebounds: no healthy player is projected above eight. Embiid absences create committee rebounds for Bona, Barlow, Walker, and Broome rather than one automatic league winner.
Role, health, and transaction watch
-
Embiid's games, not his rate, are the hinge. He played 38 regular-season games, underwent an April 9 appendectomy, returned 17 days later, and then missed Game 2 against New York with ankle/hip injuries. The affirmative signal is positive: at the June 8 Gansey introduction, HBSE president of sports Bob Myers said there are no scheduled surgeries this summer and no injury going into the offseason, framing it as a chance to build rather than to play catch-up. That is Embiid's first offseason in several years without a rehab or scheduled knee procedure, and it reframes 2025-26 as a season ended by an appendectomy rather than by a new structural knee event. The projection still holds at 44 games because three consecutive seasons under 40, a formalized no-back-to-backs policy, and a 32-year-old 7-footer's multi-mechanism injury record are base rates that one clean summer does not reset—but the distribution is now skewed upward rather than symmetric, and the 55-plus-game ceiling is materially more live than it was in June. Myers on Embiid, June 8, 2026 · NBA return report, April 26, 2026 · NBA Game 2 absence, May 6, 2026
Correction 2026-07-18: this item previously read "No July source declared a new restriction," which recorded only the absence of bad news. A June 8 affirmative clearance existed and had been missed. The 44-game point estimate is unchanged, but the reasoning and the skew are. Practical consequence for weekly formats: the operative constraint is the back-to-back policy, not a games cap—expect Embiid to sit the second night of most back-to-backs, and expect those to be the nights Bona and Barlow spike. 2. Maxey's load should fall. A March pinky tendon sprain cost at least three weeks, but he returned for 11 playoff games; there was no public July restriction. The 34-minute projection is a workload/roster decision, not an injury limitation. NBA medical report, March 20, 2026 · Sixers game notes, May 2026 3. Brown changes every wing projection. He posted career highs around 28.7/6.9/5.1 in Boston's depleted creation environment. Philadelphia gives him easier shots but fewer possessions. Brown turns 30 in October; short-term value is much stronger than long-horizon dynasty value. Rotoworld trade analysis, July 1, 2026 4. Simons is a medical and role discount. A fractured left wrist ended his season after February 21. The July signing supplies high-level shooting at a low salary, but no accessible official report declared him cleared by the cutoff. NBA player news, April 10, 2026 · NBA signing report, July 2, 2026 5. Edgecombe's fantasy development may outpace his scoring role. He can add value through rebounds, assists, steals, and manageable turnovers even as a fourth scorer. His 75-game rookie baseline—16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.4 steals—keeps the floor useful. Sixers game notes, May 2026 6. Power forward is a real camp battle, but Wade enters ahead. Wade's shooting/defense fits the stars; Barlow offers more rim pressure, more rebounding, and 59 starts in 2025-26. The four-year, full-MLE commitment to a career 5.8-point role player, made by the president who championed him in Cleveland, is a stronger signal than a depth chart. The projection allocates 43 combined minutes and lets both play. An Edwards or Brown small-ball 4 configuration would reduce Walker first, then one of the bigs. ESPN, July 1, 2026 7. The center handcuff is matchup-specific. Bona is first for blocks and verticality; Barlow is first for switchability; Hukporti and Broome are injury layers. Do not assume every Embiid absence creates 30 minutes for one backup. 8. Summer League is evidence of readiness, not role. Philon produced 24 points and six assists against Indiana; Broome followed 19/13 with 23/11. Both still sit behind established players. NBA Summer League recap, July 12, 2026 · NBA opener recap, July 10, 2026 9. Gansey's Cleveland pipeline is a forward-looking prior. A first-year president whose first major signing was his former team's role player at the full MLE is a reasonable bet to keep shopping the Cleveland org chart. Treat that as a weak prior for dynasty and in-season waiver planning, not a prediction of a specific name. 10. No tanking incentive. Philadelphia sent a 2028 first and its 2031 first to Boston in the Brown trade, and both Embiid's and Brown's contract windows are now. There is no path to and no benefit from a late-season tank, which means March and April minutes stay real and Philadelphia projects as a deadline buyer rather than a seller. That is directly usable for fantasy-playoff-week planning.
Team outcome range
- Floor — 34-40 wins: Embiid plays fewer than 35 games, another top-three creator loses extended time, and a thin frontcourt cannot protect the rim. This version raises Brown's and Edgecombe's usage but hurts efficiency and exposes Maxey to 37-plus-minute weeks.
- Base — 46-50 wins: Embiid plays roughly 44 games, Maxey/Brown/Edgecombe each clear 65, and Philadelphia lands around the top ten offensively. The projected median is 48-34, a top-six East seed with second-round probability.
- Ceiling — 53-58 wins: Embiid supplies 55-plus healthy games, the four creators solve the possession hierarchy, and Bona/Wade/Barlow make the defense average or better. That roster can win the East, although the stars' per-game fantasy ceilings compress.
- Model conflict: Andrew's July 17 RAPM-derived prior produces 36.6 wins, a 30-43 80% band, and 21% playoff probability. It is retained as a conservative independent warning, not averaged blindly into the post-Brown projection. 2026-27 NBA team outcomes
