Contract and team gate
The NBA's July free-agency reporting left James unsigned at the cutoff. Cleveland was a reported possibility, and Miami and other contenders appeared in speculation, but none was an official destination. This dossier therefore separates a zero-team baseline from a conditional playing projection. Status update 2026-07-19: still unsigned; the zero-team baseline stands. Jake Fischer (Bleacher Report, July 15) reported a sense James would announce after Summer League ends July 19, but on July 18 Brian Windhorst said James "does not care about holding the league up with its schedule" and will decide on his own timeline. The working finalist frame remains Cleveland–Miami–Philadelphia: Dave McMenamin called Golden State "more of a remote possibility than maybe we would have said a week ago," Marc J. Spears said the Warriors acknowledge being a long shot, and Anthony Edwards conceded Minnesota is "not in it." Anthony Davis confirmed Washington had "conversations" with James that went nowhere. Kalshi prediction-market pricing on July 17 still ran GSW 33% / CLE 32% / MIA 17% / PHI 13% / MIN 4%, so market and insider signals disagree on Golden State. Fantasy value
- Nine-category redraft: conditional top-45-to-80 per-game value through assists, points, rebounds, and FG%, with FT% and turnovers as the main costs. Do not spend that price until a contract and camp role exist.
- Points leagues: the counting-stat profile can remain a top-35-to-60 per-game asset, but games played and minutes matter more than name value.
- Dynasty: contender-only veteran. A rebuilding manager should treat the contract decision and retirement horizon as dominant risks.
- Floor: no draftable 2026-27 value if he remains unsigned into the season or chooses not to play.
- Ceiling: top-30 per game if he signs early, handles 31-plus minutes, and retains a primary-creator role.
Team-fit branches
- Cleveland: would compress Max Strus and Jaylon Tyson wing minutes and share creation with Donovan Mitchell and, if re-signed, James Harden.
- Miami: would add another primary creator beside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, lowering the current reserve-guard opportunity.
- Philadelphia (added 2026-07-19 — a reported finalist alongside Cleveland and Miami): would be the most crowded creation environment of the three, behind or beside Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid; a Sixers signing would push his assist share down and squeeze Justin Edwards-tier wing minutes hardest. See Philadelphia 76ers.
- Any other contender: rebuild the projection from the new team's pace, creator depth, back-to-back plan, and playoff priorities rather than copying this median unchanged.

Career honors relevant to the arc rather than the fantasy line: four MVPs (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013), four championships with three franchises (Miami 2012 and 2013, Cleveland 2016, the Lakers 2020), and the all-time regular-season scoring record, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on 2023-02-07.
Fantasy history: A season-end 2025-26 nine-category per-game rank could not be verified from the sources checked, so none is asserted here; ESPN's preseason category board had him 25th, which is a projection and not a result. The durable shape across the last decade is that his category value has always run behind his reputation because two of the nine categories are structural negatives: FT% has been below .760 in eighteen of twenty-three seasons and turnovers have never been under 3.0, topping 4.0 twice. The value has come from points, rebounds, assists and FG% simultaneously, which is a combination almost no other forward supplies. In points leagues he has graded materially better than in categories for essentially his entire career, because the turnover penalty is smaller and the FT% cost disappears entirely — the same profile that grades as a strong-but-not-elite category asset has repeatedly been a top-15 points-league asset. For 2026-27 that gap should widen further, since the 2025-26 collapse in threes hurts categories more than points.
Durability: 79, 80, 79, 78, 75, 81, 76, 79, 62, 76, 77, 69, 76, 74, 82, 55, 67, 45, 56, 55, 71, 70, 60 games — 1622 total, the most durable long career in league history by a wide margin. The pattern splits cleanly at age 34. Through 2017-18 he missed almost nothing and played all 82 in his age-33 season. From 2018-19 onward the misses became routine: a groin strain in 2018-19 (55 games), the shortened 2019-20 and 2020-21 calendars compounded by a high right ankle sprain in 2021 (45 games), abdominal and knee issues in 2021-22 (56), a right foot tendon injury in 2022-23 (55), then a partial recovery to 71 and 70 games in 2023-24 and 2024-25. 2025-26 broke that recovery: he was diagnosed with sciatica — nerve irritation in the lower back radiating into the right leg — in early October 2025, missed the season opener for the first time in his career, sat the first 14 games, and debuted in mid-November against Utah. He finished at 60 games, meaning roughly eight further absences beyond the sciatica stretch. Sciatica is the most concerning entry on this list for projection purposes because it is a recurring nerve condition rather than a discrete healed injury.
Trajectory: For twenty-two seasons the decline was almost entirely a minutes story — the per-minute production barely moved, and even at 39 and 40 he was producing 26.2 and 25.2 points per 36. 2025-26 is the first season where the rates themselves broke. Per 36 minutes his scoring fell from 25.2 to 22.7, his rebounding from 8.0 to 6.6, and his three-point volume from 2.1 to 1.3 made per game, a 38 percent drop that is far too large to be shot-luck and instead looks like a player who stopped taking a shot he no longer trusted. FG% actually ticked up to .515, which is consistent with that reading: he compensated by shifting his diet back toward the rim and toward lower-difficulty attempts, and turnovers fell to 3.0, his lowest since 2012-13. So this is not a collapse but a genuine contraction — a smaller, more efficient, more selective player rather than a broken one. The 20.9 points is the lowest of his career and matches his rookie season exactly. Entering 2026-27 at 42, unsigned, coming off a nerve condition that cost him the opener for the first time ever, the reasonable expectation is continued rate decline layered on top of further minutes reduction, and any projection that has him recovering a category — the conditional line above assumes 1.7 threes, above last season's 1.3, on fewer minutes — is betting on reversal at an age where reversals do not happen. The team-fit question in this dossier is real, but it is secondary to the fact that the underlying player is now declining on rates for the first time.
