Draft day checklist and decision rules

The operational endpoint of the encyclopedia: the settings audit that changes player value, the October re-check that makes a July board usable, explicit in-draft if-then rules, four league-specific plans, and the first-week waiver sequence.

1. Settings audit β€” do this before you look at a single player

Every row below changes a player's value. Read the actual league constitution, not the platform's marketing copy.

Setting Check for Why it moves value
League size 10 vs 12 Sets replacement level, which sets the entire shape of the board (Β§3)
Scoring 9-cat / 8-cat (no TO) / points, and the exact points weights 8-cat un-penalises JokiΔ‡, DončiΔ‡, Harden, LaMelo Ball. Points scoring erases percentages entirely, which is the single biggest re-rank in fantasy basketball
Points weights Yahoo default vs ESPN default vs custom ESPN's default adds FGM +2 / FGA βˆ’1 / FTM +1 / FTA βˆ’1 and doubles TO to βˆ’2, with STL/BLK at 4. That is a different game from Yahoo's PTS/1.2/1.5/3/3/βˆ’1 (ESPN scoring explainer)
Format H2H each-category / H2H most-categories / H2H points / roto Punting is coherent in H2H-each-category, dangerous in most-categories, near-suicidal in roto
Roster slots How many C, G, F, UTIL Two hard C slots roughly doubles centre demand and pulls Clingan, Ware, Sharpe up a full round
Bench depth 3 bench vs 5+ Deep benches make streaming and rookie stashes viable; shallow benches punish H! availability tails
IL / IL+ slots Count, and which designations qualify Yahoo's IL takes INJ/OFS only; IL+ also takes O and GTD. Players on IL score nothing even if they play (Yahoo help)
Games-played cap Per-position season cap Yahoo's public roto default is 82 games per position, and H2H has no cap (Yahoo position maximum usage). A cap converts the draft from a rate contest into a rate contest with a quota
Waiver type FAAB budget vs continual rolling priority vs daily free-agency FAAB makes the in-season market a budget game; rolling priority makes your first claim cost your position (Yahoo waivers overview)
Acquisition limits Weekly or season move cap A 4-moves-per-week cap kills streaming and pushes you toward durable, high-minute players
Lineup lock Daily vs weekly Weekly lock destroys schedule arbitrage and raises the price of the H/H! flags in 2026-27 fantasy basketball tiers
Playoff weeks Which calendar weeks, and how many teams Cross-check against the schedule once released; the All-Star break (Feb 19–21, 2027, Phoenix) creates an irregular scoring period
Keepers Any, and at what cost Turns the draft into a hybrid; use 2026-27 dynasty rankings as the second lens

The two settings that change the most: scoring system and league size. Everything else is a modifier.

2. Two weeks out β€” a July board is not a draft board

This encyclopedia's board is stamped 2026-07-18. It was built before camp, before the schedule release, and before several transactions resolved. Treat it as a prior, not a plan.

Re-check in October, in this order:

  1. Roster finality. 2026-27 NBA roster and transaction ledger β€” the July board still carries open branches on Kawhi Leonard (trade held), Harden, Duren, and an unsigned LeBron James priced only on a conditional line.
  2. Medical clearance, not "cleared." The evidence bar in 2026-27 fantasy basketball evidence and confidence policy is unrestricted camp participation plus explicit back-to-back availability. Applies to Tatum, Haliburton, Anthony Davis, Embiid, and Brandon Miller.
  3. Preseason minutes and closing lineups. Not preseason box scores β€” minutes and who finishes games. This is what resolves Pritchard, Sheppard, Ausar Thompson, and Sharpe.
  4. The schedule. The full 2026-27 grid is expected mid-August 2026; opening night is reported as Tuesday, October 20, 2026, but the official NBA key-dates page had not confirmed it at this note's cutoff. NBA Cup group play (Oct 30–Nov 27) counts toward the 82 games; only the Dec 11 final does not (NBA Cup FAQ). Do not build a playoff-schedule plan before the grid exists.
  5. Platform position eligibility. Published at pre-rank release, not before. Multi-position eligibility is worth real value in leagues with rigid slots and is not knowable in July.
  6. Actual ADP. ADP and draft market desk found no defensible post-draft 2026-27 ADP as of July 18. Your edge is the gap between your board and the room's price β€” you cannot measure that gap until the price exists.

3. Draft from tiers, not from ranks

The reason is arithmetic, not philosophy. Using this vault's own points model (Data/player-projections-2026-07-18.csv, Yahoo-default weights):

Model rank Player FP/G Value over 10-team replacement (rank 130) Value over 12-team replacement (rank 156)
1 Jokić 61.4 +34.1 +36.5
12 Barnes 45.0 +17.7 +20.1
24 Trae Young 42.1 +14.8 +17.2
48 Knueppel 37.5 +10.2 +12.6
84 Keegan Murray 31.8 +4.6 +6.9
130 Melton 27.3 0.0 +2.4
156 Cam Johnson 24.9 βˆ’2.4 0.0

Two things fall out.

The board is not smooth. Ranks 1β†’12 cost \(61.4 - 45.0 = 16.4\) FP/G across eleven slots (\(1.49\) per slot). Ranks 12β†’84 cost \(45.0 - 31.8 = 13.2\) across seventy-two slots (\(0.18\) per slot). The first round is worth more than rounds 2 through 7 combined. Between ranks 24 and 84, one draft slot is worth about a tenth of what a slot in the top twelve is worth β€” which is exactly why treating adjacent ranks as meaningfully separated is a mistake, and why grouping them into tiers is not a simplification but a correction.

League size flips the emphasis. Elite-to-mid value ratio is \(34.1/10.2 = 3.34\) in a 10-team league versus \(36.5/12.6 = 2.90\) in a 12-team league. Ten-teamers should be more top-heavy, because a shallow league's replacement level is high enough that mid-round picks are nearly free β€” you can replace them from waivers. Twelve-teamers get relatively more from the middle rounds and should be less willing to punt depth for a star.

The tier-break rule

Let \(k\) = players left in the current tier and \(p\) = picks before your next turn. Let \(q\) = the share of opposing picks likely to come from that tier (roughly 0.25–0.4 for a broad tier, higher for a scarce-position tier).

\[\mathbb{E}[\text{survivors}] = k - pq\]

If $k - pq < 1$, the tier will not survive: take from it now, even if a lower tier contains a player you like more. If \(k - pq \ge 2\), take the best player from any tier and come back.

Worked: 12-team snake, you pick 4th, next turn is pick 21 β€” \(p = 16\). Five players left in the tier, \(q \approx 0.3\): \(\mathbb{E} = 5 - 4.8 = 0.2\). The tier is gone. Take one now. Same room, ten players left: \(\mathbb{E} = 10 - 4.8 = 5.2\). Wait, and take value elsewhere.

4. In-draft decision rules

Run these in order. Stop at the first one that fires.

Category scarcity, measured

From the same projection snapshot, counting players in each band of the 9-cat model who clear a threshold:

Threshold Model ranks 1–60 61–120 121–200 Total in top 200
AST β‰₯ 6.0 19 5 2 26
STL β‰₯ 1.4 14 6 1 21
3PM β‰₯ 2.5 23 7 4 34
BLK β‰₯ 1.2 15 6 5 26
REB β‰₯ 8.0 18 10 2 30

A 12-team league needs roughly two credible sources per category per team β€” 24 slots. Assists (26) and steals (21) do not cover that; threes (34) and rebounds (30) comfortably do. Blocks are the exception that looks scarce but is not: five of the 26 qualifiers sit at ranks 121–200, more than any other category, which is why the tiers note says blocks stay available late. Steals are the genuinely hardest category to fix after the draft.

5. Five mistakes, and the correction

Mistake What it looks like Correction
Drafting last year's finish Taking Jamal Murray in round 1 because he finished there in 2025-26 Price the projection, not the result. The vault has him at 22–34
Punting by accident Three βˆ’FT bigs by round 5, then "fixing" FT% in round 8 and winning nothing Decide the punt before round 3 or don't punt. And commit to at most three categories β€” percentages and turnovers are the cleanest trio (punt guide)
Paying rate price for a totals asset Embiid at his per-game rank Use the totals column. His per-game coordinate is No. 30 in tiers; his availability-adjusted line is No. 39 and the dossier median is 44 games. In weekly-lock or shallow-bench leagues, worse still
Ignoring the scoring system Drafting a category board in a points league Mikal Bridges is the test case: ESPN's points list had him 19th; category boards land him near 70. Same player, two correct answers
Drafting the handcuff you can wait for Spending round 9 on a backup centre Blocks and rebounds are the two categories the waiver wire actually supplies. Spend round 9 on assists or steals, which it does not

6. Four plans

10-team, 9-cat. Be top-heavy β€” replacement level is high (rank 130), so mid-round picks are nearly free and waivers are genuinely deep. Take the best three players available in rounds 1–3 without regard for shape, then read your own team and decide the punt in round 4. Do not draft a second centre before round 7; a functional blocks/FG source exists at rank 121–200. Prioritise assists and steals from rounds 4–8, because those are the two you cannot stream back.

12-team, 9-cat. Balance beats stars. The elite-to-mid ratio is lower, so the marginal star pick returns less relative to a solid round-5 player. Leave rounds 1–5 with at least one elite assists source and one elite stocks source. Commit to a punt only if your first three picks already share a drain. Deep leagues punish empty roster slots more than they punish a mediocre category β€” draft for coverage, then trade into strength.

10-team, points. Minutes and low turnovers, in that order. Percentages are worth nothing, so the entire Pct risk flag in 2026-27 fantasy basketball tiers can be ignored β€” Gobert, Daniels, and Amen Thompson all gain. Confirm the weights first: if the league uses ESPN defaults, the FGA/FTA penalties partially restore efficiency and the βˆ’2 turnover weight is severe on DončiΔ‡, Cunningham, and Trae Young. In a shallow league, chase games played hard β€” 78-game durability at rank 60 beats 58-game brilliance at rank 40.

12-team, points. Same logic, but availability becomes the dominant variable because you cannot paper over a missing week from a thin waiver pool. Sort your board by projected season FP, not FP/G, then apply a manual discount to anyone with an H! flag. Durable mid-round volume β€” Knueppel (78 GP), Bridges (80 GP), Sheppard (78 GP) β€” is systematically underpriced by rooms drafting off category instincts.

7. First-week waiver plan

Do this before your first matchup ends, not after.

  1. Night one, watch minutes only. Opening-week box scores are noise; rotation shape is not. Anyone who played 28+ minutes off a projected bench role goes on the watchlist immediately.
  2. Drop the right slot first. Your first cut is the last pick you made "for floor," not your worst performer. Two games is not evidence about a player; a closed rotation door is.
  3. Budget discipline (FAAB). Do not spend more than ~15% of season budget in week one. The genuinely league-winning add β€” a starter-role vacancy from injury β€” usually arrives in November, and you want the budget for it.
  4. Priority discipline (rolling list). Your waiver position is a one-time asset. Spend it only on a player who would have been drafted in the top 120 had the role been known. Everything else can wait for the free-agent pool.
  5. Fill the scarce category, not the empty slot. If you left the draft light on steals or assists, week one is your cheapest chance to fix it β€” those are the two the wire dries up on first.
  6. Use the IL slot the day it opens. An unused IL slot is a wasted roster spot. Confirm the designation qualifies (Yahoo IL takes INJ/OFS only).
