Desk verdict
As of 2026-07-18. Charlotte won 44 games in 2025-26, then traded LaMelo Ball, Josh Green, and Miles Bridges for Naz Reid, Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neale, Mouhamadou Gueye, and a large draft-pick haul. The fantasy result is concentrated creation: Coby White becomes the starting point guard, while Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel should absorb much of the vacated usage. Reid has his first clear path to a 30-minute starting role, but the center minutes behind and beside him are a genuine three-player contest.
The best draft bets are Knueppel and Miller at a reasonable price, then White if calf-risk and lead-guard skepticism are already discounted. Naz Reid is a role-upside pick rather than a proven early-round category profile. Moussa Diabaté is the specialist target; Ryan Kalkbrenner and Hannes Steinbach are contingent-value bigs.
2025-26 team baseline
Charlotte finished 44-38 and ninth in the East, beat Miami in the first Play-In game, and lost 121-90 to Orlando. Basketball-Reference's possession model graded the Hornets at a 96.8 pace (26th), 119.4 offensive rating (fifth), 114.4 defensive rating (12th), +5.0 net rating (eighth), and +4.48 SRS (eighth). The team made 16.4 threes per game at 37.8% and ranked second in rebound percentage and offensive-rebound percentage in the official game notes.
The split is central to the forecast: Charlotte began 16-28 and closed 28-10. The Lee-extension release says the Hornets led the NBA in net rating after January 1, with the No. 1 offense, fifth-ranked defense, league-best rebound percentage, 17.3 threes, and 19.0 second-chance points per game. Ball and Bridges were major pieces of that surge, so the system signal is real but not directly portable.
Verified roster and depth chart
The live Hornets roster still contains unsigned Antonio Reeves and Xavier Tillman; neither is included below. Charlotte has 18 signed standard contracts plus three two-way contracts, so this is an offseason inventory, not a legal opening-night 15. The official NBA movement log was last modified on July 18. Dorian Finney-Smith is officially a Hornet, but a July 6 report sourced to team beat writer Rod Boone says he is unlikely to suit up for Charlotte.
| Slot | First unit | Second unit | Development / fringe |
|---|---|---|---|
| PG | Coby White | Christian Anderson Jr. / Sion James | Tre Mann, Kylan Boswell (2W) |
| SG | Kon Knueppel | Grayson Allen / James | Pat Connaughton, Mann |
| SF | Brandon Miller | Royce O'Neale / Allen | Liam McNeeley, Michael Ajayi (2W) |
| PF | Naz Reid | O'Neale / Hannes Steinbach | Grant Williams, Tidjane Salaün, Mouhamadou Gueye |
| C | Moussa Diabaté | Ryan Kalkbrenner / Steinbach | PJ Hall (2W) |
| Exit/flip candidate | — | — | Dorian Finney-Smith |
Roster-cut watch: Finney-Smith is the clearest expected departure. Charlotte still needs two more standard-roster exits; Mann, Connaughton, Gueye, and one of the veteran forwards are the most plausible pressure points. Treat every fringe player's projection as conditional until that arithmetic is resolved.
Healthy rotation: exactly 240 minutes
This is a role map, not a promise that all 12 players dress every night. It assumes Finney-Smith exits, Miller is cleared, the veterans are not immediately rerouted, and Charles Lee uses Diabaté as the nominal starter while Steinbach plays both frontcourt spots.
This table does not drive the projections. The GP × MPG grid in the next section is the primary model; this allocation describes a single fully healthy night, which Charlotte will play rarely. MPG in the projection table is minutes in games played, and it runs above the healthy-night figure for every big, because the bigs absorb the minutes freed when someone ahead of them sits.
| Player | Healthy-night minutes | Plausible range |
|---|---|---|
| Coby White | 31 | 29-34 |
| Kon Knueppel | 33 | 31-35 |
| Brandon Miller | 32 | 30-35 once cleared |
| Naz Reid | 29 | 28-33 |
| Moussa Diabaté | 22 | 20-27 |
| Grayson Allen | 21 | 18-27 |
| Hannes Steinbach | 14 | 14-24 |
| Sion James | 14 | 10-20 |
| Royce O'Neale | 13 | 8-20 |
| Christian Anderson Jr. | 12 | 8-18 |
| Ryan Kalkbrenner | 11 | 8-16 |
| Grant Williams | 8 | 0-15 |
| Total | 240 | — |
Outside the healthy-night allocation: Salaün, McNeeley, Mann, Connaughton, Gueye, Hall, Ajayi, and Boswell. They still project to appear through injuries, development assignments, matchup changes, rest, and post-deadline shutdowns. Salaün is the likeliest zero-allocation player to force his way in, though July reporting has him behind O'Neale, Steinbach, and Grant Williams and playable mainly on injury or in garbage time.
Correction 2026-07-18: Kalkbrenner was previously allocated zero healthy-night minutes while being projected for 66 games at 16.0 MPG, which the two tables could not both support. He started 31 of 69 games at 21.4 MPG as a rookie in 2025-26, opening the season as the starter and losing the job to Diabaté only after a December elbow sprain (CBS, Yahoo player grades). He is now carried at 11 healthy-night minutes, taken from Diabaté (-2), Steinbach (-3), Reid (-1), Grant Williams (-2), O'Neale (-1), Allen (-1), and James (-1); the table still totals 240. Salaün was left outside the allocation despite the same arithmetic argument, because July 17 reporting describes his rotation path as closed behind the O'Neale and Steinbach additions.
2026-27 per-game projections
All projections are this desk's estimates, frozen July 18. Nine-category order is FG% · FT% · 3PM · PTS · REB · AST · STL · BLK · TO. Rank bands are per-game redraft ranges; points bands assume a typical ESPN-style H2H system and will move with league scoring. Total-season value will be lower for players with depressed GP. GP incorporates health, two-way limits, and current roster uncertainty; MPG is minutes in games played and therefore does not itself sum to 240.

*Finney-Smith's line is a destination-neutral NBA projection; his Charlotte allocation is zero because the current expectation is a waiver, buyout, or trade.
External ranking snapshots
These numbers are deliberately not blended: points, category pre-rank, and dynasty boards answer different questions. ESPN predates every major Charlotte trade; Barutha is a July 14 gut-check rather than a finished model; Yahoo exposes no visible season/date stamp; Dynatyze's board was live July 18 but still had at least one stale team label.
| Player | Barutha redraft | ESPN H2H points | Yahoo live pre-rank | Hashtag dynasty | Dynatyze 2026-27 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brandon Miller | 33 | 51 | 45 | 57 | 47 |
| Kon Knueppel | 54 | 33 | 113 | 28 | 31 |
| Coby White | 79 | 138 | 96 | 111 | — |
| Naz Reid | 86 | 137 | 63 | 70 | — |
| Moussa Diabaté | — | 140 | 169 | 140 | — |
| Ryan Kalkbrenner | — | outside 150 | 114 | 117 | — |
| Hannes Steinbach | — | — | — | 116 | — |
The disagreement itself is actionable. Knueppel is much stronger in points/dynasty than Yahoo's category-oriented pre-rank; Reid and White are role-change players whom April numbers cannot price; Miller's surgery makes any unqualified top-35 rank aggressive.
Role battles and fantasy consequences
- Lead guard: White is the starter, but his career has been more combo guard than table-setter. Miller and Knueppel should share initiation; Anderson's path is clearer in dynasty than redraft.
- Usage: Ball and Bridges vacated roughly 37 points and 10 assists per game from last year's roster. Miller has the clearest scoring ceiling; Knueppel's percentages and threes make his fantasy floor safer.
- Frontcourt: Reid can play both frontcourt spots. Diabaté supplies rebounding and switchability, Kalkbrenner supplies rim protection and elite finishing, and Steinbach supplies the most connective offense. Foul trouble and matchup-based starts may keep all three volatile.
- Veteran wings: Allen has the best fantasy per-minute game, but he missed 31 regular-season games last year. O'Neale is the steadier real-life reserve. Finney-Smith is not being projected into the rotation.
- Development crunch: Salaün, McNeeley, Anderson, and the two-ways need NBA reps, yet Charlotte also added veterans. A deadline sell-off would radically improve their March outlook.
Team outcome range
| Scenario | Record range | What has to happen | Fantasy effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceiling | 42-46 wins | White stays healthy; Miller and Knueppel become efficient co-stars; Reid holds up at heavy minutes; the shooting identity survives Ball's exit | Four reliable standard-league players; assists are distributed rather than monopolized |
| Base | 37-41 wins | Top-heavy offense, average health, play-in chase, gradual rookie integration | Knueppel/Miller/White lead; Reid is mid-round; centers remain streaming-sensitive |
| Floor | 30-35 wins | Creation collapses, calf/shoulder/hamstring issues recur, or veterans are rerouted for assets | Shutdown risk rises; Anderson, Steinbach, Salaün, and McNeeley become late-season dynasty auditions |
Public July market snapshots conflict: one secondary aggregator displayed 43.5 wins, while a July 17 community transcription of FanDuel's league board showed 37.5. The latter better matches the current creator deficit, but neither is a durable primary sportsbook archive. The desk median is roughly 39 wins because Charlotte is still three standard contracts over the regular-season limit. Last year's late surge was real—28-10 after a 16-28 start—and Charles Lee received an extension, but the two primary creators from that run are gone.
