2026-27 base projection
| GP | MPG | FG% (FGA) | FT% (FTA) | 3PM | PTS | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 | 30 | .470 (12.0) | .845 (3.2) | 1.8 | 15.6 | 6.3 | 3.3 | 0.8 | 0.5 | 1.9 |
Nine-category: top 80-120 per game, with useful percentages, rebounds and threes but only average stocks. Points: steady mid/late-round production because the line has no categorical dead spots. Dynasty: strong young hold with a top-50 trajectory if creation grows; the ceiling is below Boozer's unless steals/blocks or usage jump.
Range, strengths and risks
- Strengths: wing rebounding, efficient scoring, low-to-moderate turnovers and across-the-board contributions.
- Liabilities: neither assists nor defensive events are yet high enough to create early-round category value.
- Floor: Grant stays above him in the hierarchy and Boozer absorbs usage; Coward repeats roughly 14/6/3.
- Base: starts and gains four active-game minutes, reaching 15.6/6.3/3.3.
- Ceiling: becomes the lead perimeter scorer, approaches 19 points and four assists, and reaches two stocks.
- Injury/transaction branches: Grant or veteran-guard exits improve touches; no major current medical branch was found.
Memphis's official All-Rookie release documents the 62-game baseline and fifth-place Rookie of the Year finish. July Summer League coverage said he was expected to play a prominent 2026-27 role, but Summer League output is not treated as a new NBA rate sample. Memphis Grizzlies All-Rookie release, 2026-05 · NBA Summer League report, 2026-07
Update 2026-07-19: Coward led Memphis past Houston 101-90 in the July 18 Summer League semifinal with 28 points, six rebounds, and five assists in 28 minutes, sending the Grizzlies to the July 19 Las Vegas final against Golden State. Dominating Vegas as an All-Rookie sophomore is expected rather than predictive, so no projection input moves; it is mild supporting evidence for the secondary-creator role. HoopsRumors, 2026-07-19

Career record
Pre-NBA: Four college seasons across three schools, climbing two full divisions. Willamette (NCAA Division III, Northwest Conference), 2021-22 as a redshirt freshman: 24 games, 30.4 minutes, 19.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.8 blocks on .608/.453/.746, winning Northwest Conference Freshman of the Year and All-NWC First Team. Eastern Washington (Big Sky), 2022-23: 34 games with 2 starts, 21.6 minutes, 7.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists on .683/.394/.742 — a bench role at a materially higher level. Eastern Washington, 2023-24: 32 games and 32 starts, 30.5 minutes, 15.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.9 blocks on .565/.383/.895, earning All-Big Sky First Team and NABC All-District First Team. Washington State, 2024-25: six games only, 33.0 minutes, 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 blocks on .557/.400/.839 before a season-ending shoulder injury. The scouting file is therefore built on 66 starts of quality-conference evidence plus a six-game high-major sample, which is why his draft range was unusually wide. Draft: 2025, first round, 11th overall by Portland, traded on draft night to Memphis for Yang Hansen and future draft considerations. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting for 2025-26.

Fantasy history: One NBA season, so there is no history to trace and no season-end nine-category rank verifiable from public sources; none is asserted. What the single line supports: the rookie profile was already category-neutral-to-positive in five places — .471 field goal percentage, .843 free throw percentage on real volume, 1.5 threes, 5.9 rebounds from a wing, and 1.7 turnovers — with the damage confined to 0.6 steals and 0.4 blocks. That is the shape of a mid-round category asset with no punt requirement and no punt benefit either. In points leagues he grades similarly rather than better: 13.6 points with modest assists gives him no separate scoring lever, but the low turnover count and rebounding keep him from the dead zones that sink defensive specialists.
Durability: 62 games, and the 20 absences were not one event. A stress reaction in his right foot was reported as dating to December 2025 and was cited as a reason Memphis capped his minutes rather than a reason he sat outright. He sprained his ankle against the Lakers on January 4, 2026 and missed multiple weeks. Right knee soreness followed an awkward landing on a rebound in the February 9, 2026 loss to Golden State, which also kept him out of the 2026 Rising Stars event. He missed the final two games with a minor back issue. Add the shoulder injury that ended his Washington State season after six games in 2024-25, and the two-year record is five separate injuries in two years, none structural and none requiring surgery. The pattern reads as an accumulation of soft-tissue and impact events on a player still adding NBA load, not as a chronic condition, but 62 games is the only NBA availability datum that exists and the dossier's 70-game projection assumes improvement he has not yet demonstrated.
Trajectory: The useful reading is per-36 rather than per-game, because 25.8 minutes understates him: 19.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per 36 is a starter's rate line already, and it came with a managed workload and a foot problem. The rebounding is the most transferable skill in the file — it was elite at Willamette, held at 6.7 through a Big Sky starting year, and translated intact to 8.2 per 36 in the NBA, which is rare for a wing and is what makes his floor sturdier than his counting stats look. The one thing that did not survive the jump is shot-blocking: 2.8 blocks at D-III and 1.7 at Washington State collapsed to 0.4, because NBA wing assignments moved him off the rim, and that is why the stocks column is his only real category hole. At 22 turning 23, with a shooting base of .843 from the line and a mediocre .338 from three, the most likely 2026-27 gain is three-point percentage regressing upward toward the free throw indicator rather than a usage jump, since Memphis still has Grant and an incoming Boozer ahead of him for shots. The honest ceiling case requires the steal rate to move, and nothing in four college seasons or 62 NBA games suggests it will.
