Payton Pritchard

Payton Pritchard is Boston's clearest fantasy breakout bet because Jaylen Brown's departure opens creation work that his 2025-26 on/off sample says he can handle efficiently.

Team: Boston Celtics · Guard · Age 28 · Base role: projected starter and secondary creator, 32 minutes

Correction 2026-07-18: minutes restored from 30.0 to 32.0, his 2025-26 workload. The prior line cut Boston's projected starting point guard below last season in the exact offseason the team removed Jaylen Brown's ~34 MPG and 28.7 PPG — a direction the file's own no-Brown evidence argues against. Rates are held at 2025-26 levels rather than extrapolated; the change is minutes only.

Nine-category: top-45 to top-65 per-game target, with stronger totals value because of his availability history. Points: middle-round guard whose ceiling rises in bonuses for threes and double-doubles. Dynasty: prime-age top-60-ish asset; more valuable to contenders than rebuilders because he is already 28 and the next contract/role may change after 2027-28.

Evidence and role

Pritchard played 79 games, started 50 and averaged 17.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 2.7 threes in 32.4 minutes in 2025-26. He shot 46.4% overall, 37.7% from three and 89.0% at the line with only 1.4 turnovers. Boston's own season award review emphasized that his growth came from attacking inside the arc: 6.7 two-point attempts per game, more than double his prior career high.

The upside mechanism is not simply "more minutes." In a Haberstroh analysis circulated after the Brown trade, Pritchard's 861 minutes without Brown yielded 26.7 points, 7.6 assists and 5.3 rebounds per 75 possessions on 60.6% true shooting. That sample contains opponent and lineup noise, so the projection captures only part of it. Tatum and George still command possessions.

The main role uncertainty is whether Joe Mazzulla starts Pritchard or restores a bench-creator job. The fantasy distinction is smaller than the label if he closes and reaches 31-33 minutes either way.

Risk and confidence

Component Confidence Reason
Roster High Under contract through 2027-28
Minutes Medium-high 50 starts and 32.4 MPG last year, but crowded guard/wing lineup
Rates Medium Strong history and efficiency; the key no-Brown sample is not a full-season role
Availability High 79 games in 2025-26 and no material July injury

A four-year starter who improved every season is an unusual profile for a first-round pick and is relevant to how he has aged in the NBA. Draft: 2020, first round, 26th overall, Boston Celtics.

The 2021-22 and 2022-23 FT% figures are real but should not be read as skill signal: 21-for-21 and 12-for-16 respectively. Free-throw volume did not become meaningful until 2023-24 (56 attempts) and only became a genuine category asset in 2025-26 (121-for-136). Six seasons, one franchise, no trades. NBA champion in 2024; Sixth Man of the Year in 2024-25, when his 219 threes off the bench set an NBA record for a reserve.

Fantasy history: Season-end nine-category finishes are not verifiable from available sources for any season, and none is asserted. The trajectory is legible without them. Through 2022-23 he was not rosterable in standard leagues at 13-19 minutes. The 2023-24 season made him a streaming-grade three-point specialist. The 2024-25 season — 3.2 threes on .472 shooting in 28.4 minutes — was his first as a genuine mid-round category asset, and the dossier's cited in-season rankings for 2025-26 reflect a further step. His shape has always been better in points formats than the category rank alone suggests, because the near-zero blocks and modest steals cap his roto ceiling while the threes, efficiency and very low turnovers all pay in points scoring. The 2025-26 free-throw volume is the first thing in his career that improved his category profile independent of shooting.

Durability: 66 / 71 / 48 / 82 / 80 / 79 games played, 2020-21 through 2025-26. This is one of the cleanest availability records in the league and the 48-game season is not the exception it appears to be. In 2022-23 Pritchard was a healthy scratch behind Malcolm Brogdon, Marcus Smart and Derrick White — eight DNP-coach's-decision games in the first 21 alone — and requested a trade after the season. The only injury cause that year was a right heel issue in March and April 2023. Otherwise the log is trivially short: a knee issue January 2021, health-and-safety protocols January 2022, a thigh issue December 2022, a thumb issue November 2024, illness February 2025, hip issues March 2025, and in 2025-26 an ankle (January 16), a neck (March 9) and a foot (April 11) — three missed games all season. He has never had a soft-tissue injury that cost him more than a handful of games.

Trajectory: The arc is unusual because the inflection was opportunity, not development — his per-minute production was already good in the years he could not get on the floor. The real skill additions arrived late and in sequence: three-point volume in 2024-25 (1.8 to 3.2 makes), then interior initiation in 2025-26, when his two-point attempts more than doubled to 6.7 per game and his assists jumped from 3.5 to 5.2 while his turnovers rose only to 1.4. That last ratio is the important number. Adding 1.7 assists and doubling drive volume for 0.4 turnovers is the signature of a player whose decision-making, not just his role, has improved. Notably his scoring rose 2.7 points on only four more minutes, so 2025-26 was per-minute growth rather than a minutes artifact. He is 28 and enters 2026-27 at the exact top of the guard aging curve, which argues for holding the 2025-26 rates rather than extrapolating another leap. The bull case rests entirely on the Jaylen Brown vacancy converting into usage; the bear case is that Tatum and Paul George absorb it and Pritchard's assists regress toward four while everything else holds. Either way the availability record means his totals rank should sit meaningfully above his per-game rank — the reverse of his new teammate Paul George.
