VJ Edgecombe

VJ Edgecombe can improve as a fantasy player even if Jaylen Brown turns him into Philadelphia's fourth scorer, because rebounds, assists, steals, and efficiency development do not require first-option usage.

Research cutoff: July 18, 2026. Team: Philadelphia 76ers. Role: starting two-way guard and secondary connector.

Edgecombe's rookie baseline was 75 games and 35.0 minutes: .438/.818, 2.0 threes, 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, 0.5 blocks, and 1.8 turnovers. Fewer minutes and shots offset a modest efficiency step in the projection. Sixers game notes, May 2026 · Hashtag dynasty/stat page, updated July 2, 2026

Development and uncertainty

Athlon described Edgecombe as the player whose ceiling lost most from the Brown trade and placed him in the middle rounds. Rotoworld similarly expects usage pressure but notes Embiid absences can reopen production. Those sources frame the uncertainty; neither demonstrates that a sophomore must regress overall. Athlon, July 4, 2026 · Rotoworld, July 1, 2026

Edgecombe dealt with a late-season back issue but returned without a reported long-term limitation. The 72-game projection is principally a normal availability estimate. His biggest risk is developmental opportunity: a win-now roster may reward low-mistake defense and reduce on-ball experiments.

Confidence

Component Confidence Reason

Career record

Pre-NBA: Bahamian; Victory International Institute (West Palm Beach, FL) for two years, then Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, NY), where he averaged 15.5 points as a junior and 17.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.3 steals as a senior; New York Gatorade Player of the Year and a 2024 McDonald's All-American. One season at Baylor (2024-25, Big 12): 33 games, all starts, 32.7 MPG, 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.1 steals, 0.6 blocks on .436 FG, .340 3P, .782 FT. Big 12 Freshman of the Year, second-team All-Big 12, Big 12 All-Freshman. Also played senior international ball before college: four games for the Bahamas at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Valencia at 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, including 21 against Poland in a run to the final against Spain. Draft: 2025, round 1, pick 3, Philadelphia 76ers — no draft-night trade.

Three-point percentage was .354 on the 2.0 makes. Rookie honors: All-Rookie First Team, Rookie of the Year finalist alongside Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel, and Rising Stars Challenge MVP. His NBA debut on 2025-10-22 produced 34 points, the most in a debut in franchise history.

Fantasy history: one season, and I could not find a citable season-end 9-cat rank for 2025-26, so I will not assign one. The shape is what matters and it is unusually clean for a rookie: 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists from a guard, 1.4 steals, 2.0 threes at .354, .818 from the line, and only 1.8 turnovers in 35 minutes. The one negative is .438 from the field on rookie-volume shot selection. That combination — good in seven categories, neutral in turnovers, negative in FG% — is a mid-round category profile that is better than its scoring suggests. Points leagues rate him somewhat lower relative to categories, because 16.0 points is modest for 35 minutes; ESPN's April 2026 way-too-early points-league list had him 36th, but that is a forward-looking projection, not a season-end finish.

Durability: 75 of 82 games as a rookie. The identified absence is a lumbar contusion — a low back bruise taken on a hard foul — that cost him three games before he was cleared; the remaining handful of missed games are not attributable to a single reported cause. He carried a 35.0-minute load all year at age 20 without a soft-tissue event, which is the encouraging part. No surgeries, no chronic issue on record.

Trajectory: There is only one professional season to read, but it is a strong one and it was front-loaded rather than gradual — the 34-point debut set the tone and he held a 35-minute starter role wire to wire on a playoff team. The Baylor-to-NBA translation was almost linear in the peripheral categories (5.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists at Baylor became 5.6 and 4.2 in the NBA) while the steal rate fell from 2.1 to 1.4, which is the normal correction when a college gambler meets NBA spacing. The one thing that did not improve was the shot: .436 at Baylor, .438 as a rookie, with the three-point rate moving only from .340 to .354. At 21 for the coming season that is a fixable profile rather than a ceiling, but it is also the entire argument — his rebounds, assists, steals and turnover economy already play, so any real 2026-27 gain has to come from efficiency, not from more shots. The Jaylen Brown acquisition cuts against volume growth and probably pushes him toward a lower-usage, higher-percentage version of the same line, which for category leagues is closer to an upgrade than a downgrade.
