Zion Williamson

Zion Williamson remains an elite field-goal and paint-scoring engine whose fantasy price depends far more on format and health than on talent.

Correction 2026-07-18 MPG 30 to 31 with counting stats scaled, as part of closing the team board's 1,608-minute shortfall. GP held at 60: he has cleared 62 games once in seven seasons, and the desk has no stated Mosley rest policy or back-to-back count to hedge it against, which remains an open question.

Role, floor and ceiling

New coach Jamahl Mosley and executive Joe Dumars publicly described Zion as a centerpiece, so the base case is a starting 29–31-minute role rather than a trade assumption. NBA Mosley introduction, 2026-05 Floor: 45 games and top-120 category value if soft-tissue injuries recur. Ceiling: 68 games, 24/7/5 and top-30 points value if conditioning and defense support a larger workload.

The lineup constraint is real: Zion–Derik Queen units reportedly allowed 122.8 points per 100 possessions and graded in the 12th percentile. Their shared spacing and rim-protection limitations can reduce Queen overlap without reducing Zion's starting role. CBS Sports, 2026-05-18

Injury and transaction monitor

His 2025-26 season included a left-foot bone contusion, eight missed games with a left-hamstring strain, a Grade 2 right-hip adductor strain and late right-knee management. NBA hamstring return, 2025-11-19 · NBA adductor report, 2025-12-02 Dumars said in April that New Orleans did not intend to trade him, while Mosley called his summer “fantastic” in July. He missed the entire 2021-22 season, hence the empty row.

Fantasy history: the only season-end rank I can cite is 2025-26, where NBA's High Score 100 placed him 45th. I could not verify season-end 9-cat finishes for his earlier years from a citable source and will not estimate them. The structural point is more useful than any single rank: he has never once cleared the games threshold that early-round category value requires, and even in his healthy years his category shape is narrow — elite FG% and points, good rebounds and assists, but effectively zero threes (0.1 made per game for his career) and a .695 career FT% on heavy volume, which is an active drag. That makes him a punt-FT% and punt-threes specialist in categories. Points leagues are where he is genuinely valuable, because 23.8 career points on .591 shooting with 4.1 assists carries no efficiency penalty in that format.

Durability: GP by season — 24, 61, 0, 29, 70, 30, 62. That is 276 games out of roughly 550 available across seven seasons, under 50%. Causes: a torn right lateral meniscus requiring surgery cost him the first 44 games of 2019-20, and he returned on a minutes restriction; a right-foot Jones fracture and September 2021 surgery erased all of 2021-22; a right hamstring strain in January 2023 ended 2022-23 after 29 games and cost him the play-in; 2023-24 was his healthy outlier at 70 games, though he strained his left hamstring in the play-in loss to the Lakers; in 2024-25 a left hamstring strain in early November cost 27 games and a lower-back contusion on 2025-03-19 cost the final 12; in 2025-26 he dealt with a left-foot bone contusion, a left hamstring strain that cost eight games before his 2025-11-19 return against Denver, a Grade 2 right adductor strain reported in early December, and right-knee management late. The pattern is what matters: three separate hamstring events in three consecutive seasons plus an adductor strain, which is a recurring soft-tissue signature rather than a run of bad luck.

Trajectory: Zion's peak, statistically, was 2020-21 at age 20 — 27.0 points on .611 shooting in 33.2 minutes, or about 29 per 36. Nothing since has matched that rate, and 2025-26 came in at roughly 25.5 points per 36, a real decline in scoring rate rather than a minutes artifact. What has held is the finishing: .600 from the field in 2025-26 was his best mark since 2020-21, and his turnovers fell to a career-low 2.0. Those two together describe a lower-usage, more selective player, and the assist drop from 5.3 in 2024-25 to 3.2 in 2025-26 says the ball moved out of his hands rather than that he stopped passing. He is 26 now, which for most players is the middle of the prime, but his effective mileage is that of a much younger player and his injury history is soft-tissue and lower-body, the category that tends to recur rather than resolve. The realistic 2026-27 read is that talent is not the variable — a 60-game, 21-and-6 season at .600 is the median, the ceiling requires a 70-game run he has produced exactly once in seven years, and the format matters more than the projection: he is a strong points-league asset and a punt-build category asset, not a balanced-roster early-round pick.
