Onyeka Okongwu

Onyeka Okongwu is Atlanta's safest mid-round big because he combines threes, assists, and defensive stats without a punt-only profile.

Team context: Atlanta Hawks · Research cutoff: July 18, 2026.

Role and 2025-26 baseline

Okongwu averaged 15.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.1 blocks, and 1.9 threes in 31.0 minutes over 74 games. He shot 48.0% from the field and 75.7% from the line. The diverse line finished around 52nd per game in nine-category even though the FG% was unexpectedly modest for a center. Basketball-Reference · Hashtag player page

Atlanta re-signed Jock Landale, which caps a pure 34-minute ceiling, but did not add a superior starting center. The top job remains secure. RotoWire outlook · Landale signing

Career record

Pre-NBA: USC, one season (2019-20). 28 games, all starts, 30.6 minutes, 16.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.2 steals, 2.7 blocks on .616 FG / .720 FT; first-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman. Posted 20 points, 13 rebounds and a school-record eight blocks in his college debut against Florida A&M. Before that, Chino Hills High School, where he was a varsity starter as a freshman alongside the Ball brothers and won back-to-back California Mr. Basketball awards. Draft: 2020, first round, sixth overall, Atlanta Hawks. No draft-night trade; a left big toe sesamoid fracture during the pre-draft process delayed his NBA debut.

Fantasy history: 2025-26 finished around 52nd per game in nine-category, the figure cited above from Hashtag. Season-end per-game ranks for 2020-21 through 2024-25 are not verifiable from the sources checked, so no numbers are given for them; note that one secondary source describing a "top-40" Okongwu season attaches that label to a 15.0/7.5/3.1/1.9 line, which is the 2025-26 stat line and not 2024-25, so that citation should not be read as a prior-season rank. The shape by season is clear even without ranks: through 2023-24 he was a low-minute, high-FG%, block-first backup with negligible threes and assists, which is a narrow punt-FT-style contributor rather than a rounded asset. The points-league shape is materially worse than the category shape — ESPN's early board has him near 108 versus roughly 50 in categories — because points formats pay nothing extra for the threes-plus-assists-plus-stocks breadth that is his entire edge, and they do penalize a center scoring 15.

Durability: 50, 48, 80, 55, 74, 74 games — 381 of a possible 476, or 80 percent, and trending up. 2020-21: the pre-draft left big toe sesamoid fracture delayed his debut and cost early games. 2021-22: torn right shoulder labrum, surgery 2021-07-21 with a six-month recovery window, which cost the front half of the season. 2022-23: healthy, 80 games. 2023-24: sprained left big toe against Chicago on 2024-02-12 — the same toe as the 2020 sesamoid fracture — initially reported as 7-to-10 days, then extended to "foreseeable future" by Quin Snyder, spanning the All-Star break. 2024-25: 74 games with no single major absence documented. 2025-26: 74 games; facial contusion and dental fracture after a Jaylen Brown elbow, requiring a dental procedure and a two-game absence, plus scattered minor misses. Two 74-game seasons back to back is the most durable stretch of his career and the toe is now two full seasons in the past.

Trajectory: The counting-stat leap from 2024-25 to 2025-26 is much less of a leap than it looks, and reading it carelessly is the main way to misprice him. Per 36 minutes his scoring barely moved, 17.3 to 17.7, because the extra 3.1 minutes did most of the work. What actually changed was the shot diet: threes went 0.6 to 1.9 and FG% collapsed from .567 to .480, a 87-point drop that is far too large to be noise and is instead the direct cost of moving him off the rim. The same move cost rebounds, which fell from 11.5 to 8.8 per 36, while assists rose from 3.0 to 3.6 per 36. So 2025-26 is a trade, not an improvement — Atlanta bought threes and playmaking with efficiency and glass work. For 2026-27 the honest question is whether the team wants that trade again; at 25 he is in the flat middle of the aging curve with no physical decline to price in, so this is a role forecast rather than a skill forecast. Note that the projection card above assumes he recovers FG% to .505 and rebounds to 7.8 while playing fewer minutes than last season, which requires the shot diet to partially revert; if the threes stay at 1.9, the .480 is closer to the true baseline than the .505 is.
