2026-27 projection
| GP | MPG | FG% (FGA) | FT% (FTA) | 3PM | PTS | REB | AST | STL | BLK | TO |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 65 | 30 | .675 (7.8) | .700 (3.0) | 0.3 | 12.9 | 11.8 | 2.1 | 0.7 | 2.4 | 1.4 |
- Healthy-night role: 30 minutes, all at center.
- 9-category: Overall range 30-50; league-shaping FG%, rebounds, and blocks, with FT% and threes as the build constraints.
- Points leagues: Overall range 45-70; format scoring for blocks and double-doubles determines the exact slot.
- Dynasty: Overall range 45-80; July market boards around No. 71 fit the risk-adjusted band.
Projection logic
Kessler's five-game 2025-26 sample — 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.8 blocks in 30.8 minutes — is too small to project literally. The rate model leans more heavily on 2024-25, when he averaged 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 30 minutes over 58 games. Luka Dončić should create high-efficiency rim finishes, while Sandro Mamukelashvili and Kevon Looney cap the need for 34-plus minutes. ESPN player statistics
Utah announced season-ending surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder after five games. Kessler said he was fully cleared at his July 13 Lakers introduction, but that is a secondary report and not equivalent to a full regular-season workload. The 65-game median reflects both the medical history and normal center volatility. Jazz/NBA surgery announcement · July clearance report
Redraft, dynasty, and scenarios
- Median: A top-tier specialist who can win blocks and materially lift FG% and rebounds.
- Ceiling: 32 minutes, full shoulder durability, and Dončić-assisted finishing produce roughly 14/13 with 2.7 blocks.
- Floor: Load management or lost closing minutes hold him below 27 MPG; a sub-65% FT season compounds the damage.
- Build note: Pair him with strong-volume free-throw anchors or commit to a punt-FT construction.
- Dynasty: At 25 entering the season, he still has a long runway, but the repaired shoulder and uncertain eventual extension keep the band wide.
Signal board
- Los Angeles acquired Kessler alone from Utah in a July 8 sign-and-trade, sending unprotected 2031 and 2033 first-round picks and 2028/2030 first-round swaps; Kessler signed for four years and $130M with a Year-4 player option and a full trade kicker. The outgoing pick cost, not the incoming salary, is the constraint that now governs the roster. NBA trade report · ESPN, 2026-07-01

Confidence
- Roster/role: High — clear starting-center path.
- Minutes/rates: Medium-high — blocks and rebounding are stable, but the tiny 2025-26 sample is not.
- Availability: Medium-low — first season after labral repair.

Career record
Pre-NBA: North Carolina, one season (2020-21), then Auburn, one season (2021-22). At North Carolina he was a reserve: 29 games, 8.8 minutes, 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 0.9 blocks on .578/.250/.537. He transferred to Auburn and the profile changed completely — 34 games, 25.6 minutes, 11.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.6 blocks on .608/.200/.596, leading Division I in blocks and posting a 19.1 percent block rate, the highest recorded in college basketball since at least 2009. SEC Defensive Player of the Year, All-SEC first team, AP third-team All-American, and both the Naismith and NABC Defensive Player of the Year awards, taken over Chet Holmgren and Mark Williams. The three things that define the NBA player were all present at Auburn: elite shot-blocking volume, high field goal percentage on a rim-only shot diet, and free throw shooting under 60 percent. Draft: 2022, first round, 22nd overall, Memphis Grizzlies — traded on draft night to Minnesota with TyTy Washington, then sent to Utah on 2022-07-06 as part of the Rudy Gobert trade.

The 2025-26 row is five games and should not be read as a rate. It is included because the shape inside it — 3.0 assists, 1.4 steals, 1.2 threes at 75 percent, 4.0 free throw attempts — is different in kind from anything in the three prior seasons, and it is the only evidence for the expanded-role case. It is also five games with 3.2 turnovers, so it cuts both ways.
Fantasy history: Season-end 9-category ranks from Basketball Monster or Hashtag could not be retrieved for this dossier, and no verifiable season-end rank was found for any of his four seasons, so no numbers are asserted. The structural read is that his category value has always been concentrated and format-dependent: he is a top-tier source of blocks, field goal percentage, and — since 2024-25 — rebounds, while contributing nothing in threes and actively damaging in free throw percentage on non-trivial volume. That combination is worth a great deal in a punt-FT build and much less in a balanced one, which means his true value has a wider spread across league constructions than his raw line suggests. His points-league shape is materially worse than his category shape: without three-pointers or scoring volume, he depends on formats that reward blocks and double-doubles specifically.
Durability: 74, 64, 58, 5. Causes: a left elbow UCL sprain sustained on opening night, 2023-10-25, cost him roughly a month of 2023-24; 2024-25 was a mix of minor hip and shoulder issues, a concussion that ended his season over the final five games, and rest days accumulated during a Jazz tanking season — he missed 17 of Utah's 33 games after January 1, so that 58 is not a clean injury count; 2025-26 ended after five games with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, repaired on 2025-11-06 by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. The record is genuinely hard to read. Only 2022-23 is a full, uncomplicated season, and the two seasons after it are confounded by an organization with no incentive to play him. The labral repair is the first structural injury in the file, and shoulder labrums in centers who finish above the rim and contest with the arm extended are a real recurrence category, not a one-time event.
Trajectory: The first two seasons were the same player with a different shot: 23 minutes, 8-9 points, elite blocks, and a field goal percentage that led the league as a rookie. The change came in 2024-25, and it was almost entirely minutes — 23.3 to 30.0 — with rebounds jumping from 7.5 to 12.2. Per-36 that is a move from roughly 11.6 to 14.6 rebounds, so some of it is real improvement in rebounding aggression, but the scoring gain is close to pure volume: his per-36 points barely moved across those two seasons. That distinction matters for pricing him, because the Lakers are unlikely to give him more than 30 minutes with Mamukelashvili and Looney behind him, which caps the lever that produced his one leap. The genuinely new information is the five-game 2025-26 sample, where the passing and perimeter activity appeared for the first time at age 24; if that survives a full season it is a different player, and if it does not it was noise. He turns 25 in July 2026, so the aging curve is on his side for another three or four years. What the history most clearly implies for 2026-27 is that the blocks and field goal percentage are the safest things in his profile — 2.3, 2.4, 2.4 across three full-ish seasons is about as stable as a category gets — and that everything else, including whether he plays 70 games, is genuinely uncertain.

Open questions
- Will official camp reporting confirm no workload restriction after labral repair?
- Can he close games when opponents pull him away from the rim, and will the tentative three-point growth persist?
