Nine-cat: top-70 to top-95, helped by low turnovers. Reference points: 28.7 FP/G, grade B-. Dynasty: 6.5/10; young, paid, and scalable, but not a primary creator.
Correction 2026-07-18: MPG raised 29.0 → 32.0 and the counting line scaled with it; nine-cat range moves from top-80/110 to top-70/95 and the points grade from C+ to B-. The earlier projection cut him 6.1 minutes off a 35.1 actual on a depth argument that the offseason contradicts — Houston's forward room got thinner, not deeper (Finney-Smith traded to Charlotte, Okogie signed with Utah), and every addition was a guard (Smart, Bogdanović, Thornton). No reporting supports a minutes cut; coverage has him holding the starting job on his five-year, $122M extension (SI). The dynasty grade is unchanged — this is a role correction, not a re-rating of the player.
Role and evidence
Smith played 77 games and averaged 15.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.73 steals, and 0.92 blocks in 35.1 minutes, shooting .450 from the field, .363 from three, and .775 at the line (Rockets game notes). VanVleet's return can improve his shot quality, and Durant, Eason, Adams, and occasional three-guard groups still compete for his forward minutes — but the competition thinned rather than thickened this summer. Houston traded Finney-Smith (16.8 MPG) to Charlotte and lost Okogie (~17 MPG) to Utah, and replaced neither with a forward; the three additions were all guards.
The July 8 Houston Chronicle lineup projection kept Smith in the opening five. Dynatyze's July 3 board ranked him 95th, a reasonable reflection of the difference between real-life defensive utility and category volume.
Range, confidence, and reversals
- Ceiling: 34-plus minutes, 17/7 with 2.5 threes and 1.1 blocks; top-50 nine-cat value.
- Floor: Eason or Sheppard closes more games, leaving Smith around 27 minutes and outside the top 110.
- Confidence: roster high; starting label high; closing/minutes medium; rates medium-high.
- Trade caveat: Houston has open inquiries on Durant and Şengün. Either moving would likely raise Smith's usage and minutes further; it is the main upside branch not priced into the median above.
- Build note: his low turnovers are real value in nine-cat but nearly invisible in many points formats.
Career record
Pre-NBA: Auburn, one season (2021-22). He started all 34 games and averaged 16.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.0 blocks in 28.8 minutes on .429/.420/.799, winning SEC Freshman of the Year, the Wayman Tisdale Award and USBWA National Freshman of the Year, and making first-team All-SEC and consensus second-team All-American. The .420 from three on real volume was the basis of the draft profile and he has not come close to it since — his NBA career mark is .347. Draft: 2022, first round, 3rd overall, Houston Rockets.

Fantasy history: No season-end nine-category rank in this file is verifiable from public archives, so none is asserted; preseason boards had him around 158th for 2025-26, but that is a projection and not a result. The category shape is stable and legible across four seasons: threes and rebounds are the load-bearing categories, turnovers are a consistent plus at 1.1 to 1.4 for a 30-plus-minute starter, FT% has been a mild positive except in 2025-26, and steals are a persistent negative at 0.4 to 0.7. Blocks have hovered at 0.7 to 0.9, useful but never enough to carry the profile. Points-league value tracks close to category value here, with the notable exception that his low turnover count — one of his genuine edges in nine-cat — is worth little in most points formats.
Durability: 2022-23: 79 GP. 2023-24: 76 GP. 2024-25: 57 GP. 2025-26: 77 GP. Three of four seasons are in the high seventies. The 2024-25 outlier was a single event: he fractured a metacarpal in his left hand at shootaround on January 3, 2025, was given a 4-to-8-week timeline, and missed 22 games before returning against Minnesota, initially off the bench. That is a traumatic bone injury with no recurrence pattern, and he started all 77 games he played the following season. There is no chronic issue in the record.
Trajectory: The 2025-26 career-best scoring line is more minutes than more player, and the rate data says so: per-36 scoring moved only from 15.5 in 2023-24 to 16.2 in 2025-26 while minutes jumped 3.2 per game to a career-high 35.1. The genuine improvement is the shot itself — .408 as a rookie to .450 last season, with three-point makes per-36 climbing from 1.7 to 2.4 — which is the normal maturation of a high-volume shooter who arrived unready for NBA range despite the Auburn number. What moved against him is rebounding: per-36 boards fell from a peak of 9.1 in 2023-24 to 7.1 in 2025-26, a substantial decline consistent with playing further from the rim alongside Şengün, Adams and Durant, and rebounds were one of only two categories where he was clearly above replacement. At 23 he still has runway, but four seasons is enough sample to say the steal rate is not coming and the block rate is capped by his defensive assignment rather than his ability. The honest 2026-27 read is a stable, low-variance starter whose fantasy ceiling now depends almost entirely on minutes surviving Houston's depth, because the underlying rates have largely settled.

- Does Smith close over Eason or Sheppard when Houston needs offense?
- Can he raise block rate while defending more power forwards than centers?
