Nine-cat: top-100 to top-140 per game, with assists, threes, steals, and low turnovers offsetting FG%. Reference points: 26.5 FP/G, grade B. Dynasty: 3.5/10; short-horizon contender only.
Correction 2026-07-18: MPG trimmed 27.0 → 26.0 with the counting line scaled down. Houston added three guards this offseason (Smart, Bogdanović, Thornton) while subtracting only forwards, so the rotation compression belongs in the guard room; the freed minute went to Jabari Smith Jr., whose earlier cut was unsupported. Rafael Stone has also framed Smart explicitly as insurance to reduce VanVleet's early-season workload (Hoops Rumors). Grade and dynasty tier unchanged.
Role and evidence
Houston's projected opening lineup puts VanVleet with Thompson, Durant, Smith, and Şengün (Houston Chronicle, July 8). He should lead half-court organization while Thompson attacks in transition and Sheppard supplies secondary creation. This desk caps him at 27 minutes because the team can use Sheppard and Smart during the ramp.
VanVleet missed all of 2025-26. Houston reported right ACL reconstruction and repairs to both menisci on September 25, 2025. In July he said he expected to be ready for the 2026-27 opener (Yahoo Sports report); a target is not the same as full clearance. His healthy 2024-25 baseline was 14.1 points, 5.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in 60 games (NBA contract report).
Range, confidence, and reversals
- Ceiling: 30-32 minutes, roughly 15/4/6 with 2.7 threes and 1.5 steals; top-75 value if the knee is functionally normal.
- Floor: a delayed return, frequent rest, or a 20-24 minute cap leaves him outside standard-league value and pushes Sheppard into the starting role.
- Confidence: roster high; minutes low; rates medium-low; availability low.
- Draft trigger: buy only after five-on-five clearance and a camp workload report. Every positive medical step is more informative than a July rank.
Career record
Pre-NBA: Wichita State, four seasons, 2012-13 through 2015-16. 4.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists on .386/.408/.725 as a freshman on the 35-1 team; 11.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.9 steals on .484/.418/.830 as a sophomore; 13.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists on .430/.357/.796 as a junior; 12.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists on .390/.381/.817 as a senior, when a rolled right ankle and hamstring trouble limited him early. Missouri Valley Player of the Year in 2014 and 2016, first-team All-MVC three straight years, and he left as the program's career leader in both assists (637) and steals (225). Draft: undrafted in 2016; signed with Toronto on July 18, 2016 after their summer league.

Fantasy history: Season-end nine-category ranks are not retrievable from open sources here, so no year-by-year finish is asserted. The box scores locate the value window at 2019-20 through 2023-24, five seasons of 35-to-38 minutes in which he delivered 2.7 to 3.7 threes, 6.3 to 8.1 assists, 1.4 to 1.9 steals and a free throw percentage between .810 and .898. That is a four-category engine with an unusual bonus: elite free throw percentage from a guard who shoots poorly from the field, which is the specific combination that makes him a natural punt-FG% build anchor rather than a liability. The field goal percentage has never been an asset — .399 for a career, and below .420 in eight of nine seasons — and the turnovers were a real cost in the high-usage Toronto years, peaking at 2.6 in 2021-22. Points leagues have consistently rated him lower than categories, because assists and threes are worth proportionally less there than the percentage and steals edges are worth in nine-cat.
Durability: 37, 76, 64, 54, 52, 65, 69, 73, 60, 0. The pre-2025 record is one of chronic small absences rather than structural injury: a partial ligament tear in the left thumb in early February 2019 cost roughly three weeks, a hip flexor injury on April 2, 2021 ended a 76-game three-point streak and the same hip flexor recurred in the 2022 playoffs, and in 2024-25 he missed 16 games across February 3-26 and March 3-10 with a right ankle strain. The 2019-20 and 2020-21 totals also sit inside league seasons shortened to 72 games. The defining event is the last row. He tore his right ACL in an offseason workout in late September 2025; Houston reported reconstruction of the ACL plus repairs to both menisci on September 25, 2025, and he missed the entire 2025-26 season despite publicly pushing for a playoff return in December. A double-meniscus repair alongside the ligament is a materially worse profile than an isolated ACL, and it is the reason a July statement of intent should not be read as clearance.
Trajectory: VanVleet's career is one of the best undrafted arcs in the modern league and it was built on two distinct leaps. The first was 2017-18, when he went from a 7.9-minute rookie to a 20-minute sixth man without a change in skill, just opportunity. The second, 2019-20, was the real one — 27.5 to 35.7 minutes and 11.0 to 17.6 points as Toronto handed him the post-Leonard offense, with three-point volume and steal rate both jumping to levels he then held for four years. The aging signal was already present before the knee. Field goal percentage fell to .378 in 2024-25 with scoring down to 14.1 and assists down from 8.1 to 5.6 in the same minutes, which is per-minute decline rather than role loss, and it arrived at 30 in a player whose game depends on pull-up shot creation rather than athleticism. Now add a year lost at 31 to a reconstructed ACL and two repaired menisci. The honest read for 2026-27 is that the shooting-and-passing skills should survive because they were never explosion-dependent, but the defensive activity that produced 1.4 to 1.9 steals is the first thing knees take away, and Houston's own behavior — capping him near 27 minutes with Sheppard and Smart behind him — is the most informative projection on the roster. Treat the 2024-25 line, not the 2023-24 one, as the ceiling.
