2026-27 projection

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Correction 2026-07-19: GP cut from 65 to 55. The 65 contradicted this dossier's own durability record — 55, 47, 42 over the last three seasons (mean 48), four straight declining years, and no 70-game season in his career. The 2025-26 season ended February 23 with a right hip impingement, inflammation, and bone bruise (ESPN hip-injury report · Hoops Rumors, 2026-02). The July FIBA minutes justify removing any active-injury discount and projecting at the top of the recent range, not above every season since 2022-23: 55 matches his best of the last three years and retains the ordinary Utah late-season shutdown risk the durability section documents as partly organizational.
- 9-cat: 25-45; points: top 35-55; dynasty: 45-70.
- Role: starting 3/4 and elite off-ball scorer in Utah's projected 240-minute map.
- 2025-26 baseline: 42 games, 34.4 minutes, 26.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.7 threes, .477 FG, and .896 FT. ESPN Utah stats, accessed 2026-07-18
Fantasy thesis
Markkanen's category profile is unusually clean: elite free throws at real volume, strong field-goal percentage for a perimeter scorer, threes, points, and low turnovers. Darryn Peterson and a healthy Jaren Jackson Jr. lower his 26.7-point baseline, but their creation should also restore assisted-shot quality. ESPN ranked him 44th in its April points board; Hashtag ranks him 51st in analyst dynasty and 52nd in the July crowd market. ESPN, 2026-04-14 · Hashtag dynasty, accessed 2026-07-18 · Hashtag crowd, updated 2026-07-18
Markkanen's prior right-hip issue is functionally cleared: he played 29 and 26 minutes for Finland on July 3 and July 6. Keep the normal Utah games-played/team-direction discount, but do not carry a stale active-injury tag into camp. Official FIBA player log
Ceiling: 70 healthy games at 33 minutes preserve top-20 to top-25 per-game value. Floor: another sub-55-game year or a February organizational pivot destroys totals value even if the per-game line remains strong.
Career record
Pre-NBA: Jyväskylä, Finland; came up through the Helsinki Basketball Academy system (HBA-Märsky) in the Finnish lower divisions rather than a U.S. high school, then one season at Arizona (2016-17). He played 37 games for 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds on .423 from three and .835 from the line, the second-most points by a freshman in Arizona history, and was named first-team All-Pac-12 and a third-team All-American. Draft: 2017, first round, No. 7, Minnesota Timberwolves — traded on draft night to the Chicago Bulls as part of the Jimmy Butler deal.

Fantasy history: Season-end nine-category ranks are not verifiable from a rater source here and are not estimated. What the line supports without a rater: 2017-18 through 2021-22 he was a streaming-to-mid-round big whose value came almost entirely from threes and free-throw percentage on a mediocre field-goal base; 2022-23 was the fantasy breakout, when the move to Utah added ten points of scoring at .499 shooting and made him a genuine early-round per-game asset; 2023-24 was nearly as good per game with better free-throw shooting but fewer games; 2024-25 was the outlier down year, a .423 shooting season that dragged his field-goal percentage from asset to liability; and 2025-26 restored the efficient high-volume shape in only 42 games. His per-game and total-value ranks have diverged sharply every year since 2022-23, and in category leagues the profile is unusually clean — elite FT% at real volume, threes, low turnovers, no blocks — which makes him a fit alongside a shot-blocking center rather than a standalone anchor.
Durability: GP by season: 68, 52, 50, 51, 61, 66, 55, 47, 42. Four straight declining seasons and no 70-game year in his career. The 2018-19 total reflects a sprained right elbow in training camp that cost the first 23 games. The 2019-20 and 2020-21 raw numbers understate availability somewhat because those team seasons ran 65 and 72 games; within them he missed time to a right AC-joint sprain in February 2021 given a two-to-four-week window. In 2023-24 he sat 17 of Utah's final 21 games, including the last nine, with a right shoulder problem that also kept him out of Finland's Olympic Qualifying Tournament. The 2024-25 causes are not verified here. In 2025-26 he last played February 23, 2026: an MRI found a hip impingement with inflammation and a bone bruise, sustained in practice, and he did not return, costing roughly the final two months. Utah's late-season position each year makes the shutdown decision partly organizational rather than purely medical, which matters for totals leagues more than per-game ones.
Trajectory: The Chicago years were a well-shot-but-low-leverage stretch power forward on bad teams; the 2020-21 efficiency uptick came with the smallest role of his career and should not be read as growth. The real leap was 2022-23 in Utah, and its cause is unambiguous: usage. He went from a fourth option to the first, and the striking part is that efficiency rose with volume — .499 on 25.6 points is the single best season of his career and the reason he won Most Improved Player. Since then the per-game production has been stable and high whenever he is on the floor, with 2024-25 the one genuine down year and 2025-26 reading as a full return to form. The concerning trend is not skill but exposure: 66, 55, 47, 42 games, with the shoulder and hip both recurring soft-tissue-adjacent problems in a 7-foot frame now entering an age-29 season. For 2026-27 the per-game projection deserves near-full confidence and the games-played projection deserves very little; he is a per-game specialist to buy in head-to-head and to discount hard in roto totals.

Open questions
- Does Utah keep Markkanen at small forward beside two bigs, or use him mostly at power forward?
- Will a competitive season remove the shutdown risk that defined the prior rebuild?
