Nic Claxton

Nic Claxton is Chicago's starting rim runner and defensive center, best used in punt-FT builds that value blocks, FG%, rebounds, and unusual center assists.

Team context: Chicago Bulls · Research cutoff: July 18, 2026.

Role and baseline

Claxton averaged 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 0.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks in 27.8 minutes across 69 games for Brooklyn, shooting .571 from the field and .616 from the line. Basketball-Reference

Chicago finalized its four-team acquisition on July 10. Elias Schuster projected Claxton as the uncontested starting center while identifying Smith and Collins as the backup battle; that is the sensible base case, not an official depth chart. Career record

Pre-NBA: Georgia, two seasons, 2017-18 and 2018-19. 3.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 14.7 minutes on .449/.364/.523 as a freshman; 13.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 2.5 blocks in 31.6 minutes on .460/.281/.641 as a sophomore. Second-team All-SEC by the coaches in 2019. The sophomore year is the entire scouting file: a 31-minute, high-block, low-efficiency big on a bad team, with a free throw stroke already flagged at .641 and a three-point sample too small and too poor to build on. Draft: 2019, second round, 31st overall by Brooklyn.

Fantasy history: Season-end nine-category ranks are not retrievable from open sources here, so no year-by-year finish is asserted. The box scores put the peak at 2022-23 without argument — 12.6 points and 9.2 rebounds with 2.5 blocks on a .705 field goal percentage that led the league is a season that carries a roster by itself in punt-FT builds, and the three years since have each subtracted something from it. The profile has always been format-defined rather than rank-defined: zero threes and a .555 career free throw mark on real volume mean a balanced nine-category team pays twice for him, while punt-FT and punt-3PM builds get elite percentage, rebounds and blocks. The unusual asset is the assists, which are genuinely rare from a non-shooting center and are the reason he grades better in points leagues than most rim-runners. The 2025-26 line is the most balanced version of him and simultaneously the weakest defensive one.

Durability: 15, 32, 47, 76, 71, 70, 69. The early years were badly broken: a hamstring injury cost him 11 games from December 11, 2019 to January 5, 2020, then arthroscopic labrum repair on his left shoulder ended the rookie season, and right knee tendinopathy cost him 32 games between December 2020 and February 2021. The causes of the 2021-22 absences are not verified here. Since 2022-23 he has been reliable, playing 76, 71, 70 and 69 games in four straight seasons. In 2024-25 he missed the entire preseason with a hamstring problem and later sat a stretch after an epidural for a lower back strain. In 2025-26 he missed two games in February with an ankle injury suffered in practice and the final five games with a sprained finger, which is the flag still carried on July injury lists; reporting at the time expected him ready for camp. Four consecutive seasons near 70 games is the number that should drive the projection, not the 2019-21 wreckage.

Trajectory: Claxton's arc is a clean ascent through 2022-23 and a slow structural erosion since. The 2022-23 leap was minutes plus role — 20.7 to 29.9 MPG as Brooklyn handed him the starting job, with a shot diet reduced almost entirely to lobs and putbacks, which is what produced the league-leading .705. Everything after is the reverse process on a rebuilding team: field goal percentage .705 to .629 to .563 to .571 as he was asked to face up and create rather than finish, and blocks collapsing from 2.5 to 2.1 to 1.4 to 1.1 across the same four years. That block decline is the most important line in the table, because it is not a minutes artifact — the minutes barely moved — and it is the category that made him a specialist. What has replaced it is passing: assists from 1.9 to 3.7 in three seasons, real skill growth that reflects Brooklyn using him as an elbow hub, plus a free throw percentage that jumped to a career-high .616 in 2025-26 and softened his worst category. He is 27 and physically in his prime, so the question for 2026-27 is not aging but environment. If Chicago restores a drop-coverage, roll-man role the field goal percentage and blocks can partially recover; if Giddey absorbs the initiation and Claxton keeps the face-up diet without the passing volume, the 2025-26 line is closer to a ceiling than a floor.
