Tyjae Spears

A handcuff — a lottery ticket on the starter ahead of him getting hurt — but an unusually cheap one, because he already catches enough passes to score a little even when the ticket never pays.

The role

A handcuff (Fantasy football glossary) is the backup to a lead running back, and his value is almost entirely conditional: he is close to worthless while the starter plays and a weekly starter the moment the starter does not. The starter here is Tennessee's Tony Pollard, the highest-projected running back on the roster in Data/players.csv and a three-down bell cow — on the field every down, collecting carries and catches both. What makes Spears the better kind of handcuff is that the file already gives him passing-down work, so he is not purely a bet on someone else's misfortune.

The number

The promoted file lists 115.9 projected points, 86 carries, 38 catches, and 10-team proxy ADP 121.8. In full PPR those catches are 38 points before yardage; the handcuff role remains conditional.

The risk

The CSV flags his risk as high, and the honest framing is expected value. A handcuff is usually a dead roster spot while the starter plays; the payoff can be large when a vacated role consolidates, but the chance of that branch is small. Do not carry forward a July league-wide start average as a current forecast. There is a second layer here: Spears has missed nine of the last fifty-one games, so the ticket itself has availability risk — see Availability and injury risk.

The context

Historical observed context from Data/player_context.csv (retrieved 2026-07-25): he is twenty-five on the September 9 opener, a 2023 third-round pick — 81st overall, by Tennessee, out of Tulane. Availability is the weak spot: 17 games as a rookie, then 12 and 13, forty-two of fifty-one, with four weeks listed Out and four Questionable or Doubtful. In 2025 he took 45.9 percent of snaps (a snap is one play — Fantasy football glossary), 72 carries, and caught 45 passes on 50 targets in thirteen games. Those observed facts do not certify the current passing-down projection.

August 2 candidate snapshot

The gated 10-team candidate file lists 115.9 projected points (86 carries, 38 catches) and Fantasy Football Calculator 10-team PPR proxy ADP 121.8. It remains a conditional handcuff profile; no current status row certifies a larger role.
