Current 10-team snapshot
The promoted Data/players.csv row lists TB RB, bye 10, ADP 42.4 (ffcalc-ppr-10tm-2026-08-02), 229.0 projected points over 17 games, lead committee; Gainwell receiving, and med risk (261 carries, 39 catches projected). It supersedes the earlier three-down label. The canonical ledger calls him the lead back but marks the role conditional because Kenneth Gainwell has meaningful receiving/change-of-pace competition. Preseason routes and goal-line rotation are required before making a numeric workload adjustment or asserting a three-down role.
The role
The candidate model assigns a bell-cow outcome, but the verified current role is lead back with a receiving/workload gate. A carry is a running play handed to him and a catch supplies the second income stream; whether he receives both consistently remains unresolved. See Fantasy football glossary.
The number
261 carries. From the gated candidate feed dated 2026-08-02—a model projection, not an observation. It is a bell-cow-shaped outcome, but the current ledger makes the receiving and change-of-pace split conditional; do not treat the label as established fact.
The risk
The CSV lists his risk as med, and the driver is the receiving half of the case. Tampa Bay also rosters a passing-down back — few carries, many catches — whose projected catch total is close to Irving's own. If that third-down role hardens, Irving is an early-down back with a bell cow's price, and in full PPR the catches are the expensive part. The 261-carry projection also assumes seventeen games, which he has managed once in two seasons — and his modelled availability of 0.804 sits just under the 0.823 running-back mean, a model rather than an observation, and one that says more about the position than about him (Availability and injury risk).
The context
He is 24 on the September 9 opener, and Tampa Bay took him 125th overall in 2024 — fourth-round capital, which makes him the exception to Draft capital dominance: nobody handed him this job. He has two NFL seasons only; 2023 he spent at Oregon. He played all 17 games in 2024 and 10 of 17 in 2025, and every absence sits on the official injury report — seven weeks listed Out, six more Questionable or Doubtful, naming foot, shoulder and toe. In 2025 he took 61.6% of snaps, 173 carries and 35 targets, just 6.5% of Tampa Bay's throws. He is on a rookie deal worth about $4.8 million in total, and is not a free agent until 2028.

Open questions
- Does the projection assume he keeps third-down work, or is it splitting the difference between two plausible coaching plans?
- His bye is week 10, one week before the week-11 crunch when six teams are off — see Bye-week planning.
