Health and role case
San Antonio announced that Quaintance underwent successful right-knee surgery on July 15. The procedure was a meniscus repair, and it was a known follow-up rather than a new injury: he tore the ACL in that knee in February 2025 as an Arizona State freshman, complications from the tear limited him to four games at Kentucky the following season, and the Spurs drafted him 20th knowing the clean-up was coming. No formal return date was given, but the reporting is not silent. He will miss all of training camp and the start of the season; league sources said multiple teams expected the procedure to sideline him for most of 2026-27, and the early Spurs expectation is that he is not ready until some point in 2027. Correction 2026-07-18: this file previously said the surgery had "no return timetable" and carried a 20-game projection as a conservative placeholder, omitting the February 2025 ACL tear entirely. Both were wrong. The ACL history is central to reading this injury, and 20 games was more optimistic than any public expectation. Cut to a 5-game token line with a full redshirt as the base case.
The Spurs signed him to a first-round rookie-scale contract after the 2026 draft. His switchable defense, rebounding and shot-blocking give him a fantasy-friendly eventual profile, but raw offense, free throws and recovery add major variance. Even when cleared, Victor Wembanyama, Luke Kornet and Tarris Reed Jr. can absorb the center minutes, while Tobias Harris and the veteran wings cover power forward. The San Antonio Spurs can afford a redshirt-style season.
Ceiling and floor
- Ceiling: clears rehab by late spring, earns 12-15 minutes in a decided season and hints at the blocks profile.
- Floor: misses 2026-27 entirely, which is the reported expectation; zero redraft impact.
- Best use: injured reserve in deep dynasty formats with patient timelines.
- Dynasty: upside comes from rare stocks potential beside Wembanyama; risk comes from health and a narrow offensive role.
Career record
Pre-NBA: Arizona State 2024-25 as a 17-year-old freshman: 9.4 PTS / 7.9 REB / 1.5 AST / 2.6 BLK on .525 FG in 24 starts, setting ASU freshman records for total blocks (63) and rebounds per game; Big 12 All-Defense and All-Freshman before a torn right ACL on February 23, 2025 ended the season. Transferred to Kentucky 2025-26 but ACL complications limited him to 4 games (5.0 PTS, 5.0 REB, .571 FG). Draft: 2026, Round 1, Pick 20, San Antonio Spurs.
No NBA record. Most recent meaningful season: 2024-25 at Arizona State (24 GP, 9.4/7.9/2.6 blocks); only 4 college games since.
Durability: This is the whole file: right ACL tear (February 2025), a lost Kentucky season from complications, and a follow-up meniscus repair on the same knee July 15, 2026, with reporting pointing to most or all of 2026-27 missed.
Trajectory: The record shows one of the youngest elite shot-blocking seasons in recent college basketball — 2.6 blocks a game at 17 — followed by 17 months in which he has barely played. The talent case (stocks, rebounding, switchability beside Wembanyama) is intact; the evidence base has not grown since February 2025. In 2026-27 he competes for nothing: full redshirt is the base case behind Wembanyama, Kornet and Reed. He becomes fantasy-relevant only in dynasty — an IR-slot stash whose payoff arrives in 2027-28 at the earliest, and only if a twice-operated knee holds.

Open questions
- Does the meniscus repair hold on a knee that already tore its ACL, or does this become a chronic file?
- Does he appear in the NBA at all in 2026-27, or is the first real look a 2027 Summer League?
- Will San Antonio develop Quaintance primarily at center or power forward?
