Josh Okogie

Josh Okogie fills Utah's clearest real-life need as a perimeter defender, but his low usage makes him a steals streamer rather than a draft target.

Fantasy thesis

Utah signed Okogie to a two-year standard deal July 9. Local analysis calls the move underrated because Utah lacked point-of-attack defense; that can earn real minutes without producing fantasy volume. NBA movement data, accessed 2026-07-18 · Axios roster overview, 2026-07-13

Ceiling: 20 minutes against guard-heavy opponents produce one-plus steals. Floor: shooting limitations leave him outside the nightly rotation.

Career record

Pre-NBA: Two seasons at Georgia Tech (2016-17, 2017-18), where he was the primary scorer from the day he arrived — 16.1 points and 5.4 rebounds as a freshman for ACC All-Freshman honors, then 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists as a sophomore for third-team All-ACC. Career college line of 16.9 points on .437 shooting. Born in Lagos, Nigeria. Draft: 2018, first round, 20th pick, Minnesota.

Durability: Broadly reliable — 494 games in eight seasons, including 78 last year. The two thin seasons were role, not health: 49 games at 10.5 minutes in 2021-22 when he fell out of Minnesota's rotation entirely, and 40 games across 2024-25 split by a midseason trade from Phoenix to Charlotte.

Trajectory: Eight seasons of the same player. Okogie has never shot well — .409 career from the field, .312 from three, and only twice above .420 for a season — so his minutes have always been paid for by defense, and his role has oscillated between 25 minutes and out of the rotation depending on how much a given team needed a point-of-attack stopper. Houston used him for 78 games at 17.4 minutes in 2025-26, and his 38.5% from three was easily a career high, but on 2.1 attempts a game against a 31.2% career mark it is noise, not a new skill; the .594 free throw percentage the same year makes the point about small samples in both directions. Utah signed him to a two-year standard deal on July 9 for exactly the reason Phoenix and Houston did — the roster had no perimeter defense. That earns minutes without earning fantasy value: his best steals season since 2019-20 was 0.9, and he has never produced a scarce category in volume. He is a matchup-based steals streamer, relevant in nine-cat only if Utah pushes him to 20-plus minutes against guard-heavy opponents while its young wings sit. Do not draft him; do not expect the three-point rate to hold.
