Tyler Nickel

Tyler Nickel is a proven movement shooter with a plausible two-way path, but he remained an unsigned Knicks draft-rights player at the July 18 cutoff and therefore has no secure NBA games.

Team rights: New York Knicks · Status: unsigned second-round rights · Position: SG/SF · Season age: 23 · Experience: rookie · Role: conditional development shooter · As of: 2026-07-18

Prospect evidence

New York acquired Nickel after Phoenix selected him 47th. The official NBA draft profile lists a 6-foot-8, 217-pound senior who averaged 13.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 30.6 minutes for Vanderbilt, shooting 44.5% from the field, 40.0% from three, and 84.7% at the line. His clearest translation skill is movement shooting.

He then scored 18 points with four rebounds against Brooklyn (NBA.com, July 10) and made four threes in a 16-point game against San Antonio (NBA.com, July 11). Those games support the shooting thesis, not immediate rotation certainty.

Market and confidence

Shooting translation is medium-high; defense and all-category rates low; contract and games low. No public redraft rank should override the unsigned status.

Career record

Pre-NBA: Four college seasons, three schools, 127 GP — North Carolina 2022-23 (25 GP, 2.1 PTS as a buried freshman), Virginia Tech 2023-24 (33 GP, 8.8 PTS/2.2 REB/1.3 AST), then Vanderbilt for two years (33 GP, 10.4 PTS in 2024-25; 36 GP, 30.6 MPG, 13.5 PTS/3.3 REB/1.2 AST on .445/.400/.847 as a senior). College career: 9.2 PTS, 2.2 REB, 1.0 AST on .433/.394/.838. Draft: 2026, Round 2, Pick 47, Phoenix Suns — rights acquired by New York. No NBA record — most recent season is 2025-26 at Vanderbilt (36 GP, 13.5 PTS, 40.0% from three). Durability: 127 games across four college seasons with no notable injury absences; the freshman-year DNPs at UNC were depth-chart, not health. Trajectory: The record shows a classic transfer-portal climb — from end-of-bench ACC freshman to 13.5-point SEC senior — powered by one elite skill, movement shooting, with career 39.4% three-point accuracy and almost nothing in rebounds, assists, or defensive events. In 2026-27 he first has to convert unsigned draft rights into a two-way or camp deal, then compete for a Shamet-style specialist role in New York. He becomes fantasy-relevant only in the narrow scenario where he is on an NBA contract, injuries open wing minutes, and the shooting earns Brown's trust — otherwise he is a G League development shooter with zero category footprint.
