Why this shape
- Smith's 1.4 steals in only 16.3 minutes is a real fantasy mechanism; prorating the entire line to starter minutes would be a mistake.
- Giannis and Bam can organize non-Mitchell minutes, allowing Miami to choose defense over traditional point-guard creation.
- Miami still has open standard roster spots and an obvious need for another handler. The projection cuts his role before any such signing is official.
- Tre Donaldson is on a two-way and is more developmental than immediate competition.
Format outlook
- Nine-category: steals streamer in 16-team leagues; watchlist in 12-team formats.
- Points: generally not draftable without a Mitchell injury.
- Dynasty: deep roster hold only; the per-minute steals keep him relevant in 30-team formats.
- Best use: short-term category specialist when his playing time projects above 18 minutes.
Range and watchpoints
- Ceiling: 20 MPG, 3–4 assists and 1.5+ steals if Miami makes no guard addition or Mitchell misses time.
- Median: 10–14 minutes and occasional matchup DNPs.
- Floor: displaced from the regular rotation by a veteran signing or Conwell/Larsson handling development.
- Efficiency: low shot volume limits both the harm and the upside of his percentages.

Career record
Pre-NBA: Two years at Evansville, a redshirt transfer year, then two at Missouri. He broke out as an Evansville sophomore (13.7 points, 4.6 assists, 2.0 steals on .578/.482/.862) and remained a high-steal lead guard in the SEC: 12.7 points, 3.9 assists and 2.1 steals in 2019-20, then 14.3 points, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals on .442/.398/.833 in 2020-21. Honors: first-team All-SEC (coaches) and SEC All-Defensive Team in 2021, MVC Most Improved (2018). Born December 30, 1997. Draft: undrafted (2021). Durability: The defining feature of the career. A season-ending knee injury ended 2021-22 before he played an NBA game; an ACL tear suffered November 22, 2023 ended 2023-24 after nine games; a torn Achilles ended 2024-25 after 14 games, announced December 24, 2024. He then played 70 of 82 in 2025-26 — by an enormous margin his healthiest season and the first evidence that the body has held.
Trajectory: Five NBA seasons producing 108 games, three of them cut short by major lower-body injuries, and one full season that finally showed what the profile is: a low-usage backup point guard who organizes an offense without turning it over and gets steals at a rate almost nobody at 16 minutes matches. The 2025-26 shooting was the weak point — .295 from three on light volume gives him no scoring floor. He enters 2026-27 as the nominal backup behind Davion Mitchell with Miami still holding roster spots and an acknowledged need for another handler, so his role is not secure. He becomes fantasy-relevant if Miami adds no veteran guard and Mitchell misses time, pushing him toward 20 minutes where the steal rate alone makes him a category streamer.

- Which veteran guards, if any, does Miami add before camp?
- Can Smith keep an elite steal rate if his minutes rise?
- Is he the fixed backup point guard, or a matchup-specific defender in point-forward units?
