Role and evidence

Houston signed Newton to a two-way on January 3, 2026. The G League page lists 25.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists and still identifies him as a two-way player (player page); he also made the 2025-26 All-NBA G League first team.

Newton scored 17.0 points with 4.8 rebounds and 2.0 steals through four 2026 Summer League games, including 20 points, six rebounds, two steals, and a block on July 16. His NBA sample was one 12-minute game. A fresh team release confirming the precise 2026-27 contract year was not located, so roster confidence is below Copeland's.

Career record

Pre-NBA: Five college seasons. East Carolina 2019-22 (11.0/4.5/3.7, then 8.7/4.3/4.2, then 17.7 PTS/4.8 REB/5.0 AST with second-team All-AAC in 2021-22); UConn 2022-24 — 10.1/4.5/4.7 on the 2023 national champions, then 15.1 PTS/6.6 REB/6.2 AST leading the 2024 repeat title team (Final Four Most Outstanding Player, consensus first-team All-American, Bob Cousy Award). Nine NBA games and 28 total minutes — effectively no NBA record. His real recent production is the 2025-26 G League season with Rio Grande Valley: 25.6 PTS, 5.2 REB, 4.5 AST and All-NBA G League first team. Durability: No injury history of note; the sparse NBA GP reflect contract status (waived by Indiana October 2024, brief Minnesota stint, Houston two-way from January 2026), not health. Trajectory: The record shows a decorated college winner whose scoring translated immediately to the G League but who has yet to receive an NBA runway — his single extended NBA outing (12 points in 12 minutes in the 2025-26 finale) is the whole positive sample. In 2026-27 he competes to keep a Houston two-way and be the first scoring-guard call-up. He becomes fantasy-relevant only via conversion to a standard deal plus a multi-week guard injury in Houston; absent that, he is a dynasty-only stash.
