Two nonstop flights · Three rail legs · No checked bag

Windows, not numbers

Two nonstop carry-on flights, a committed Lake Como rail and ferry day, and three direct high-speed trains whose exact winter numbers remain provisional.

Recommended flights

Live snapshot checked for three adults on 21 July 2026:

Date Flight Published schedule Carry-on fare used in plan
Sun Dec 20 Delta DL184 JFK → MXP 19:50 → 09:50 Mon, nonstop, 8h part of $1,220 pp multi-city fare
Sat Jan 2 Delta DL231 FCO → JFK 13:00 → 17:00, nonstop, 10h part of $1,220 pp multi-city fare

Recommended three-person total: $3,660 / $1,220 per person as one Delta multi-city Main Basic ticket, taxes and mandatory fees included. Each traveler gets one personal item and one overhead carry-on; no checked bag is needed. The fare is live, not held, and Basic does not include advance seat choice or changes.

Per person
$1,220Delta multi-city Main Basic, taxes and mandatory fees included.
Three-person total
$3,660One open-jaw ticket, both legs nonstop.
Cheaper pair
$1,105American plus Aer Lingus — $115 each less, 4h05 longer.
Absolute air cap
$1,350Per person, including any deliberately purchased seats.

Why this pair

  • Both flights are nonstop and sit on one open-jaw ticket.
  • Milan-in/Rome-out matches the closure-safe route.
  • DL231 leaves Rome at 13:00, avoiding a punishing pre-dawn airport transfer.
  • The all-nonstop fare is only about $115 per person more than the best sensible one-stop combination, so the time and winter-connection savings are worth the modest premium.
  • The new plan is about $229 per person below the earlier checked-bag flight allowance.

Cheaper carry-on alternative

If price is the priority, use two independently ticketed long-haul legs:

  • AA198: JFK 18:25 on 20 December → MXP 08:05 on 21 December, nonstop, $1,385 total / about $462 each in Basic.
  • EI403 + EI107: FCO 11:20 on 2 January → Dublin 13:35; protected 3h10 connection; Dublin 16:45 → JFK 19:25, $1,929 total / $643 each.
  • Combined: $3,314 / about $1,105 each.

American Basic includes a personal item and a 22 × 14 × 9-inch carry-on. Aer Lingus includes a personal item plus a 10 kg cabin bag for a regional segment connecting to its transatlantic flight; Dublin U.S. preclearance makes the arrival easier. This saves $346 total / $115 each but adds 4h05 and a winter connection on the homebound travel day.

A $1,086-per-person American/British Airways multi-city fare appeared, but its Heathrow connection was only 1h45. Saving $19 per person against the Dublin version is not worth the tighter winter transfer.

Airfare rule

Reprice for exactly three adults before paying.

Ceiling

Buy the two-nonstop Delta ticket at $1,250 per person or less; the absolute air cap including any deliberately purchased seats is $1,350.

If Delta rises above the target, compare:

  1. the $1,105 American/Aer Lingus carry-on combination;
  2. the same dates as a single multi-city search;
  3. EWR only if it materially improves the total; and
  4. a date change only if it preserves the requested New Year’s Eve and 1 January recovery day.

Do not shorten the trip for the current date-flex fares: 21 December outbound costs the same as 20 December, and 1 January sacrifices the requested celebration for too little savings. Compare the checkout total, cabin-bag allowance, seat fees, and change restrictions before purchase.

Intercity trains

Precision caveat

The trip begins after Italy’s annual rail timetable change on 13 December 2026. As of 21 July, Trenitalia and Italo were not selling these dates. RFI’s process places the final timetable proposal in early November. Therefore, any exact December train number shown now would be false precision.

The plan below is the precise booking specification: buy the closest direct Frecciarossa or Italo departure inside the target window once the operator publishes it.

Date Leg Target departure Normal direct time Planning fare
Wed Dec 23 Milano Centrale → Venezia Santa Lucia 18:30–19:00 after Lake Como about 2h15–2h30 €30–50
Sat Dec 26 Venezia Santa Lucia → Firenze S. M. Novella 08:45–09:30 about 2h–2h15 €30–55
Tue Dec 29 Firenze S. M. Novella → Roma Termini 13:15–13:45 about 1h25–1h40 €30–50
Stations

Use these exact central stations. Venezia Mestre is on the mainland; the plan requires Venezia Santa Lucia on the historic island.

Official route benchmarks and direct booking

Booking procedure

  1. Begin checking both operators weekly in September.
  2. For 26 December, favor a flexible fare because it is Santo Stefano and the Accademia plan depends on timely arrival.
  3. Book all travelers in one transaction and select adjacent seats.
  4. Compare ordinary fares with FrecciaYOUNG/Italo Young for travelers aged 20 and three-person Friends fares; discounted inventory is limited.
  5. Recheck every booking around 10–15 November, after the timetable milestone, and again seven days before travel.
  6. Screenshot tickets and hotel addresses for offline use.

High-speed tickets have assigned seats and require no validation. Arrive 20 minutes early, keep the ticket and photo ID accessible, and do not build a separate non-protected connection on either side.

Lake Como connection rule

23 December uses separately ticketed regional/ferry travel before the Milan–Venice high-speed train.

Connection rule

Target return to Milano Centrale by 16:40 for an 18:35 departure, leaving roughly 1h55 to absorb a missed boat or regional delay. Do not book a high-speed departure with less than 90 minutes of planned slack.

The full day, its three weather versions and the 07:00 decision gate are set out in Lake Como winter day.

Rail budget

Published promotional floors can be under €20 per leg, but Christmas seats should not be budgeted at the floor. Reserve €100–155 per person for all three high-speed trains. Regional trains for Pisa and Lucca are handled separately in the day-by-day itinerary.

The governing rail agreement normally bars scheduled rail strikes from 18 December through 7 January, but weather, technical failures, demonstrations, and engineering works can still disrupt service. Check these before each move.

Luggage strategy

Everyone should bring one overhead carry-on plus one personal item, with no checked bag. Keep the roller within Delta’s 22 × 14 × 9-inch limit and target 10 kg or less even though Delta generally does not publish a domestic-style cabin weight limit; that keeps the bag compatible with the cheaper Aer Lingus fallback and easier on Venice bridges. Do laundry once in Florence.

  • Train luggage is self-handled and boarding can be fast.
  • Venice adds bridges, stairs, cobblestones, and small hotel elevators.
  • The Lake Como day stores all three rollers at Milano Centrale rather than carrying them onto the regional train or ferry.
  • Italo Smart caps a bag at 75 × 53 × 30 cm; the airline-size rollers fit. Italo travel ambiences
  • Keep passports, medicine, cash, and electronics in the personal item.
  • Add an AirTag and internal contact label to every roller.
  • Ask a Venice lodging for the exact vaporetto stop and number of stepped bridges before booking.
