open days, food and neighbourhoods on holidays, and only three hotel changes.

The plan protects arrival day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day; it also starts
Venice at 09:15 after the late Lake Como transfer. “Drop first” items are genuine pressure-release
valves, not hidden homework.
The fourteen days
Day 0
Sunday, 20 December — fly to Milan
Sleeps on the plane
06:0012:0018:0024:00
16:45Meet at JFK Terminal 4.
19:50Target Delta DL184, nonstop to Milan Malpensa.
Eat lightly, set phones to Italian time, and sleep after meal service.
The band above is New York’s daylight, not Milan’s — the sun sets over JFK before we board.
Every band after this one is Italian.
See flights and trains for the live fare snapshot, baggage
assumptions, and alternatives.
Day 1
Monday, 21 December — arrival and soft landing in Milan
Sleeps Milan
06:0012:0018:0024:00
Goal: see Milan without betting prepaid tickets on an
international arrival.
09:50Scheduled arrival at MXP.
10:00–12:15Border formalities, Malpensa Express, and hotel bag
drop. Carry-on-only removes baggage-claim time, but first-use EES can still be slow.
12:30Coffee, pastry, and a real lunch near Centrale, Brera, or
Cairoli.
13:45–15:15Sforza Castle courtyards and a short Parco Sempione
loop; museums are optional.
15:30–16:30Brera lanes, design shops, and cafés. The Pinacoteca
is Monday-closed, so no major art booking sits here.
16:45–18:00Piazza del Duomo exterior, Galleria Vittorio
Emanuele II, La Scala exterior, and the Christmas lights after dark.
18:30Early aperitivo in Brera or Navigli.
20:30Back at the hotel; protect sleep.
Drop first
Parco Sempione, then Brera. Do not move a paid Duomo ticket onto arrival day.
Day 2
Tuesday, 22 December — Milan’s essentials
Sleeps Milan
06:0012:0018:0024:00
09:00Arrive at Santa Maria delle Grazie. Check-in is required
30 minutes early.
09:30–10:15Target: official guided visit including
Leonardo’s Last Supper; the painting room itself remains a controlled 15-minute
viewing.
10:15–10:45Santa Maria delle Grazie and a coffee.
10:45–12:15Walk through Cadorna to Sforza Castle; choose one
compact museum section or enjoy the courtyards.
12:30–13:30Lunch around Cordusio/Brera.
14:00–16:00Milan Duomo Combo Lift: cathedral,
archaeological area, museum, and rooftop terraces. Current combo-lift price is €26; holiday
hours should be rechecked. Official Duomo
16:15–17:00Galleria and La Scala square in daylight/dusk.
17:00–19:00Optional: Pinacoteca di Brera only if everyone
still wants another museum. Otherwise, use these two hours for a nap and a slower dinner.
19:30Aperitivo followed by risotto alla milanese, ossobuco,
cotoletta, or mondeghili.
Book now
The official 09:30 English guided visit if three seats remain. A live
official check on 21 July found no standard-admission block of three for 22 December; the
guided product was the earliest practical official inventory.
The Last Supper is closed Mondays, 25 December, and 1 January. Tickets are named and require
arrival 30 minutes early. If the 09:30 guided inventory disappears, monitor the official
Wednesday-noon extra releases; use Brera or the Ambrosiana rather than a high-markup reseller
if no official seat appears.

Drop first
Brera Gallery. The Last Supper and Duomo are the day’s two anchors.
Day 3
Wednesday, 23 December — Lake Como and the evening train
Sleeps Venice
06:0012:0018:0024:00
Lake Como is now committed. Exact trains and ferries remain templates until the 2026/27
winter schedules appear; the protected structure matters more than a provisional train
number.
06:45Checkout.
07:00Store the three carry-ons at KiPoint/KiBag inside Milano
Centrale, currently €10 each and open 07:00–21:00.
08:20–09:24Target: direct RE8 to Varenna-Esino. If the
final winter pattern offers only 07:20 or 09:20, take 07:20.
09:25–10:20Varenna’s lakeside passerella, old harbour, Piazza
San Giorgio, and coffee.
10:20Arrive at the ferry dock.
10:40–10:55Target: ferry to Bellagio; 11:10 is the
prior-winter backup.
11:00–12:15Salita Serbelloni, Basilica San Giacomo if open, and
Punta Spartivento.
12:30–13:55Reserved indoor lunch at Seta; Nando is the
lower-cost backup.
14:00–14:30Short Pescallo/waterfront loop only if lunch ends on
time.
14:55–15:10Target: ferry back to Varenna.
15:35–16:40Target: direct train to Milano Centrale.
16:40–17:05Collect luggage.
17:05–18:05Early meal near Centrale or buy train food.
18:35–21:03Target: direct high-speed train to
Venezia Santa Lucia. Current Italo 8995 is only a timetable template; buy the
closest flexible direct departure once winter inventory loads.
21:15Hotel check-in. No Venice sightseeing obligation
tonight.
The normal version is Varenna + Bellagio. If boats are suspended after arrival, keep Varenna.
For severe wind, snow/ice, dense fog, or all-day heavy rain, switch to Como city while keeping
the lake commitment. The full operating plan, lunch choices, cost, and weather gate are in
the Lake Como winter day.
All travellers qualify for Rolling Venice at age 20: buy/activate the card plus discounted
72-hour ACTV pass on arrival or the next morning; it currently totals €33.
Official ACTV fares
Day 4
Thursday, 24 December — Venice’s monuments and Christmas Eve
Sleeps Venice
06:0012:0018:0024:00
09:15Arrive at St. Mark’s security.
09:30–10:30Timed complete St. Mark’s Basilica
visit: basilica, Pala d’Oro, museum, and Horses Loggia. Current complete ticket is €30 with a
published student reduction for eligible visitors through 26. Use only the
official ticket portal.
10:45–12:45Doge’s Palace ordinary route, state rooms, armoury,
Bridge of Sighs, and prisons. If the official December calendar offers a well-timed English
Secret Itineraries tour, it may replace the ordinary route.
Official visitor information
13:00–14:15Seated lunch away from San Marco frontage.
14:30–15:45Compact Dorsoduro loop: Accademia Bridge, Squero di
San Trovaso, and Zattere. Do not try to cover the district.
16:00–16:35Shared gondola from a quieter stazio such as Dogana,
Santa Maria del Giglio, or San Tomà. The municipal daytime rate is €90 per boat for
30 minutes, so it costs €30 each for three.
Official tariff
16:45Buy water, breakfast food, and emergency snacks before
shops close.
17:00–19:30Hotel rest and change.
20:00Prebooked Christmas Eve seafood dinner within walking
distance of the hotel.
Book
St. Mark’s, Doge’s Palace, one proper seafood dinner, and the shared gondola. The later start
protects sleep after the Lake Como transfer.
24 December is not a national holiday, but shortened attraction, retail, and transit hours
are common. Confirm the day’s sequence when the 2026 bulletin appears; if either interior
shortens, keep St. Mark’s and drop Dorsoduro.
Day 5
Friday, 25 December — Christmas in Venice
Sleeps Venice
06:0012:0018:0024:00
Rule for the day: keep Christmas secular and depend on no
museum, shop, or spontaneous dinner.
09:30–11:30Slow Cannaregio and Jewish Ghetto walk, then continue
toward Rialto through quiet lanes.
11:30–12:15Optional: quiet church/nativity visit
between services. If the group truly wants Mass, attend a complete
neighbourhood service after its 2026 schedule appears; do not enter merely for a brief
fragment.
13:00–15:30Long, prebooked Christmas lunch. A hotel restaurant
is the safest fallback.
15:30–16:45Grand Canal vaporetto ride or a Zattere/Salute sunset
walk.
17:00–19:00Hotel rest, cards, photos, or a café/bar confirmed
open.
19:30Light dinner from a reservation or food bought the previous
afternoon.
Do not add Murano or Burano. The long meal, empty lanes, and recovery time are the experience
today.
Why this works
Venice remains compelling with its interiors closed, and the easy day protects energy before
four active days.
Day 6
Saturday, 26 December — Venice to Florence and Michelangelo
Sleeps Florence
06:0012:0018:0024:00
07:15Breakfast and checkout.
08:15Reach Venezia Santa Lucia.
08:45–09:30Target: direct high-speed train to
Firenze S. M. Novella, normally about 2h–2h15. 26 December is a public
holiday; buy a flexible fare and reconfirm service.
11:00–12:15Arrive, walk to the hotel, leave bags.
12:30–13:30Casual lunch near Mercato Centrale; verify holiday
hours.
14:15Arrive at Accademia security.
14:30–15:45Accademia: Michelangelo’s Prisoners and
David, then Giambologna or the musical-instrument rooms.
15:45–17:00Walk Piazza del Duomo → Via dei Calzaiuoli →
Orsanmichele → Piazza della Signoria → Uffizi courtyard → Ponte Vecchio around sunset.
17:15–18:15Oltrarno aperitivo.
19:30Tuscan dinner; ribollita or pappardelle is gentler than
scheduling the steak splurge immediately after a travel day.
Accademia normally opens 08:15–18:50 and closes Mondays, 25 December, and 1 January. Current
full advance admission is €20 plus €4 reservation. December inventory was not yet live when
checked.
Official visit information ·
official tickets
Safety valve
Reserve Accademia only after the train schedule gives at least 60–75 minutes of slack. If it
cannot, move Accademia to Sunday late afternoon and shorten the Duomo museum block.
Day 7
Sunday, 27 December — the Uffizi and the Duomo
Sleeps Florence
06:0012:0018:0024:00
07:55Arrive at the Uffizi.
08:15–10:45Focused route: Giotto and early Renaissance →
Botticelli → Leonardo/Michelangelo/Raphael → Titian/Caravaggio if energy permits.
11:00–12:00Early lunch near the Duomo.
12:15Leave bags at the Duomo’s required deposit.
12:35Report for the dome slot.
12:45–13:35Brunelleschi Dome climb, 463 steps and no lift.
13:45–15:15Opera del Duomo Museum.
15:20–15:50Baptistery.
16:00–18:00Unscheduled café/rest time or Santa Croce/Oltrarno
walk.
19:30Reserved bistecca alla fiorentina dinner. Confirm price per
kilogram and share the cut; it is traditionally served rare.
The Uffizi is normally Tuesday–Sunday, 08:15–18:30, and closed Mondays, 25 December, and
1 January. Reserve the first entry from the
official ticket shop; the current reserved
high-season price is €29. The €30 Brunelleschi Pass covers the dome, museum,
baptistery, bell tower, and Santa Reparata for three calendar days, but the dome time is
strict and named.
Official Duomo tickets ·
pass rules
Pacing
Do not add Giotto here. Its climb is deliberately spaced to the morning of 29 December,
within the same three-day pass.
Day 8
Monday, 28 December — Pisa and Lucca
Sleeps Florence
06:0012:0018:0024:00
This is the trip’s most ambitious day. It exploits Florence’s Monday museum closures and
combines one icon with a calmer walled city. The times are current Monday timetable
templates, not confirmed December trains. Re-run them once the winter regional
schedule appears.
06:40Reach Firenze SMN.
07:00–07:51Target: Regionale Veloce to Pisa Centrale,
currently €9.30.
08:00–08:35Walk about 1.8 km to Piazza dei Miracoli.
08:45Tower check-in and required bag storage.
09:00–09:35Leaning Tower climb.
09:40–11:10Cathedral plus Camposanto or Baptistery.
11:20–11:50Walk to the station; quick snack.
12:20–12:47Target: Pisa Centrale → Lucca, currently
€3.90.
14:15–14:50Piazza Napoleone → San Michele in Foro → Via
Fillungo → Piazza dell’Anfiteatro.
15:00–15:40Torre Guinigi climb, weather and safety
permitting.
15:40–16:25Café plus a short wall walk; add the cathedral only
if it does not remove the seated break.
16:41–18:25Target: direct regional train to Florence,
currently €8.40.
19:45Relaxed dinner near the hotel.
Allow roughly €22 rail + €20 Pisa Tower + live Lucca/Pisa monument prices.
Pisa Tower inventory normally opens about 90 days ahead; buy from the
official Opera della Primaziale Pisana site.
Check final regional trains directly with
Trenitalia.
Commitment
Pisa and Lucca are both committed. Protect them by keeping the coffee break and long Lucca
lunch, not by adding more monuments. Only an actual rail disruption, unsafe tower conditions,
or illness should collapse the plan to Pisa alone.
Day 9
Tuesday, 29 December — the final Florence climb and the train to Rome
Sleeps Rome
06:0012:0018:0024:00
07:45Checkout and leave bags.
08:15–09:00Giotto’s Bell Tower, 414 steps. It
is spaced two days after the dome and one day after Pisa/Guinigi rather than stacked on
Sunday.
09:00–10:00Coffee and a real recovery break.
10:15–11:15Florence Cathedral interior and Santa Reparata. The
Brunelleschi Pass activated Sunday remains valid through Tuesday.
11:20–12:20San Lorenzo/Mercato Centrale lunch.
12:30Collect bags and walk to Firenze SMN.
13:15–13:45Target: direct high-speed train to Roma Termini,
normally about 1h25–1h40.
15:00–16:00Arrive, hotel bag drop, short reset.
17:30Pantheon timed entry; current admission is €7 and December
inventory should appear around mid-November.
Official Pantheon
18:15–18:45Piazza Navona and the seasonal Befana market.
18:55–19:20Trevi Fountain after the lights come on; inner-basin
access currently costs €2, while the square view remains free.
19:30–19:55Via dei Condotti and Spanish Steps.
20:15Booked Roman dinner near the hotel.
Train contingency
Leave at least 2¼ hours between scheduled Rome arrival and the Pantheon slot. If the final
timetable cannot support that, take an earlier train and keep the Giotto climb; the cathedral
interior is the pressure-release item.
Day 10
Wednesday, 30 December — the Vatican and Trastevere
Sleeps Rome
06:0012:0018:0024:00
07:15Leave the centre, ideally by shared taxi.
07:35–09:15St. Peter’s Basilica and Vatican Grottoes. Basilica
entry is free, but everyone passes security.
09:15–09:40Walk around the Vatican wall to the museum
entrance.
15:20–16:00Ponte Sant’Angelo and the castle exterior.
16:00–16:30Taxi or bus to Trastevere; drop the Via Giulia
detour.
16:30–18:15Santa Maria in Trastevere and neighbourhood
lanes.
18:30Aperitivo.
20:00Trastevere dinner.
Vatican Museums normal hours are 08:00–20:00, with closures 25–26 December and 1 January. Use
only the official museum portal. Current
reserved price is €25 full or €15 for qualifying students through age 25 with valid current
proof.
Official hours
Optional upgrade
St. Peter’s dome before the museums, only if the official inventory permits moving the museum
entry later. It adds stairs and about two hours; skip Castel Sant’Angelo afterward.
Day 11
Thursday, 31 December — ancient Rome and an official, controlled New Year’s Eve
Sleeps Rome
06:0012:0018:0024:00
08:15Arrive at the Colosseum with photo ID.
08:30–09:45Colosseum first and second tiers.
10:00–12:40Roman Forum and Palatine: Via Sacra, Basilica of
Maxentius, House of the Vestals, Curia, Palatine overlooks.
12:50–14:15Long lunch in Monti.
14:30–16:30Hotel nap, phone charging, shower, and change. The
confirmed We Run Rome 10K may disrupt central streets that afternoon, so the Campidoglio/Ghetto
loop is removed.
16:30–17:00Light aperitivo/snack if needed.
17:15Arrive at Teatro Costanzi with tickets and ID.
18:00Swan Lake, officially marketed as
San Silvestro all’Opera. Target three adjacent €48 balcony seats or €35
first-gallery seats when single-ticket sales open 8 October.
About 21:30Reserved late dinner near Repubblica/Monti or at
the hotel; wait for the published runtime before fixing the reservation time.
00:00Indoor toast at the restaurant, hotel, or a small reserved
bar. Walk back together rather than depending on a taxi at midnight.
The archaeological park’s published winter schedule is 08:30–16:30, last entry 15:30, and it
is closed 1 January. Named Colosseum tickets open exactly 30 days ahead, so buy the
31 December slot around 1 December from the
official portal.
Official hours and rules
The official show is the best match for “real celebration, fewer crowds.” The public Circo
Massimo program for 2026/27 is not announced; a prior edition drew more than 70,000 people. If
the group later prefers the mass countdown, use the outer edge and an exit aligned with the
hotel, accepting that it will not be leisurely.

Day 12
Friday, 1 January — one gentle Rome loop
Sleeps Rome
06:0012:0018:0024:00
Rule for the day: no transfer and no museum dependency.
11:00–12:15Slow breakfast and late start.
12:30–14:30Reserved New Year’s lunch near the centre.
15:00–16:30Choose one outdoor loop: Piazza del
Popolo–Pincio–Villa Borghese, or the Aventine–Orange Garden. Do not combine them.
16:30–18:30Hotel rest and packing.
19:30Reserved dinner or a casual meal whose holiday opening was
reconfirmed.
Optional switch
If Rome publishes Capodarte 2027, replace the walk with one small,
reservation-controlled official theatre, museum, or chamber event rather than a main-square
crowd. If weather is poor, use only a venue appearing on the official 1 January bulletin;
those listings are a bonus, not the backbone.
Day 13
Saturday, 2 January — Rome to New York
Sleeps at home
06:0012:0018:0024:00
08:00Breakfast and checkout.
08:45–09:00Leave for FCO by the fixed-fare €55 taxi or Leonardo
Express.
10:00Target airport arrival.
13:00Target DL231, nonstop FCO →
JFK.
17:00Scheduled New York arrival.
The band above stops at the departure from Rome. The 17:00 arrival is New York time, and the
rest of the day belongs to a different clock.
Built-in pacing rules
Never add an attraction before an intercity train.
Keep one seated meal and one 60–90 minute rest block on each full day.
23 December and 28 December are the two structurally long days; do not add nightlife after
either.
On a rainy day, preserve the timed anchor and remove the least important exterior block.
On a delayed transfer, do not chase the itinerary; use the named “drop first” item.
Average walking is likely 12,000–20,000 steps on full days. The Pisa–Lucca day is the
outlier.
Open questions
Does the final Lake Como timetable preserve the two-hour Milan buffer documented in
the Lake Como winter day?
Which bed layout and hotel location will make the 23 December and 31 December walks easiest?
After the opera runtime is published, which late restaurant can confirm a table for three and an
indoor midnight toast?
