Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome — four hotel bases, three high-speed trains and
eight distinct places, sequenced so that nothing worth seeing is shut on the day we arrive.
Christmas Day in Venice · sunrise 07:47, sunset 16:31
06:0012:0018:0024:00
The sun rises at 07:47 and sets at 16:31. That single fact does more to shape this
itinerary than any preference we have: it is why the Lake Como boats are caught before nine, why every
climb is a morning climb, and why the long reserved lunch — not the afternoon — is where the day's
leisure lives. The bar above is the shape of a day. It appears on every one of the fourteen.
The four beds
Milan
2 nights · Dec 21–23
The Last Supper, the Duomo roof, a first aperitivo — and the launch point for Lake Como.
Venice
3 nights · Dec 23–26
St Mark's, the Doge's Palace and a gondola on Christmas Eve; then a city with everything
closed, which turns out to be the point.
Florence

The Accademia, the Uffizi, two of the four climbs — and a Monday day trip to Pisa and Lucca
while the museums are shut.
Rome
4 nights · Dec 29–Jan 2
The Vatican, the Colosseum, and Swan Lake at Teatro Costanzi at six o'clock on
New Year's Eve.

Why north to south
Fly JFK → Milan overnight on Sunday 20 December, travel south by rail, and fly
Rome → JFK on Saturday 2 January. The direction is not sentimental. It is what the
holiday calendar allows.
There is no city change on 25 December or 1 January, when transport and
attractions are most constrained.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are already in the city where we sleep — no risky late transfer.
Milan's Last Supper falls on a Tuesday rather than its Monday closure.
Florence's museum-closing Monday becomes the natural Pisa–Lucca day.
The Vatican and Colosseum land on fully operational midweek dates, and 1 January is reserved
for one gentle outdoor loop.
The likely afternoon nonstop out of Rome is more forgiving than Milan's typical morning departure.
This is the ambitious-but-controlled version. Naples and Genoa are excellent; a fifth base over this
calendar would turn roughly ten usable sightseeing days into a transfer-heavy trip. That reasoning is
laid out in what we cut.
The packet
How to read the plan
Three words carry specific meanings throughout the packet.
Book
The date and normal opening pattern are published. Reserve it.
Target
The recommended train or flight window. Schedules and prices can still move.
Optional switch
It replaces something else rather than being added on top.
Research was checked on 21 July 2026. The winter rail timetable, municipal holiday
transit plans, many restaurant holiday menus and some attraction calendars are not yet published. This
packet distinguishes confirmed facts from planning targets rather than inventing precision.
First five actions
Reprice and buy Delta DL184 + DL231 as one multi-city ticket if the
three-person carry-on total holds near $3,660. Use the $1,105 American/Aer Lingus combination only if
the saving matters more than a nonstop return.
Buy the official 09:30 English guided Last Supper visit on 22 December if
three seats remain. Standard admission currently has no block of three.
Hold one refundable legal triple or three-person apartment in each city. The live value set
is about $2,419–2,439 including estimated taxes.
Put 8 October on the calendar for three adjacent Swan Lake seats at
Teatro Costanzi on New Year's Eve.
Monitor the 2026/27 Lake Como ferry timetable and winter rail schedules from late October
through mid-November, then lock the 23 December chain.
Open questions
Must all three of us have separate beds, or is one double plus one single acceptable when it
materially improves location or price?
Is the group more excited by Burano photography, Murano glass, or extra unstructured time in Venice?
Does anyone have dietary restrictions, accessibility needs, or a passport expiring before
3 July 2027?
Does sitting together on the overnight flights matter enough to pay for advance seats on a
basic fare?
